Crusaders beat Cranberry 13-3 to win D9-A crown

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders came up with eight runs on seven hits and four walks in the home half of the fifth inning to capture the District 9 Class A baseball championship over the Cranberry Berries by a 13-3 score.

School board falls short on hiring superintendent

The search for a new St. Marys Area School District superintendent continues as a vote to hire a replacement for outgoing Superintendent Ann Kearney came up short during a special board of directors meeting held Thursday evening.
"Obviously we're still in search for a new superintendent," said Bob Luchini, SMASD school board president.

Berwind Park turns 100

One hundred years ago today, on Saturday, May 30, 1914, the first game of baseball was played at Berwind Park.
That first game pitted the newly formed, salaried team of the St. Marys Base Ball Association against the visiting P. & E. Renovo squad. "P. & E." stood for "Philadelphia & Erie," referring to the railroad that passed through both St. Marys and Renovo. The game ended up being a 10-inning contest, with St. Marys emerging victorious 2-1.

St. Marys man charged in domestic dispute

Police have charged a St. Marys resident in the assault of his girlfriend, which was witnessed by four known adults and at least two of the victim's small children.
Sean Michael Owens Jr., 23, of 205 Walnut St., is charged with simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct for an incident that occurred on May 28 at about 12:20 a.m.

Storytime in the Park returns with Dr. Seuss works

The upcoming Storytime in the Park offers the best of both worlds for families who enjoy reading and the outdoors.
Dickinson Center, Inc. (DCI) is sponsoring the event taking place Friday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Benzinger Park in St. Marys. In case of inclement weather a rain date is set for June 13.
"Our goal is to help promote literacy and bring attention to all four areas of early learning development in kids in the area," said Nicky Cashmer, DCI Parents as Teachers (PAT) Educator and event coordinator.

Connecting WIC to the workforce

In celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first Women, Infants and Children [WIC] program in Pennsylvania, local officials in Ridgway on Wednesday highlighted their own initiative during a meeting of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission's executive board.
"WIC is a critical component of who we are and what we do as a regional organization," said Eric Bridges, executive director at North Central.

County's Historical Society celebrates 50 years

RIDGWAY – The Elk County Historical Society will be celebrating its 50th anniversary with a summer celebration to be held on Saturday, May 31.
The day will begin at 11 a.m. with a presentation on the history of the society from its beginnings in 1964 at the first unofficial meeting at the Ridgway YMCA to its present-day locale along Center Street.

Shirley Nachtway Krieg

Shirley Nachtway Krieg, 84 of Naples, Fla., died on May 22, 2014.
Born in St. Marys to the late Fred and Fidelis (Hoehn) Nachtway, Shirley was a proud graduate of St. Marys Catholic Central High School in 1947.
She was a longtime member of St. Mark Catholic Church of Emporium, and St. Leo’s Catholic Church of Bonita Springs, Fla.
Shirley was also a florist and office manager, but her most cherished role was being a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
