SMAHS students and faculty brighten holidays for area children

St. Marys Area High School students and faculty have demonstrated their holiday spirit by participating in the Giving Tree program sponsored by The Salvation Army.
Recently they have all pitched in and donated $2,000 worth of new clothes, toys, bikes, shoes and jackets for families whose Christmas would otherwise be bleak. 

After two mistrials, Ecklund pleads guilty

RIDGWAY – Brandon J. Ecklund, 22, of Ridgway, pleaded guilty Monday morning to a misdemeanor charge of corruption of minors, which had been downgraded from a felony charge.
District Attorney Shawn T. McMahon informed the court that the Commonwealth and the defense had worked toward a resolution given the cost and complications of prosecution.
He noted that the cost of prosecution was considerable as a key witness had to be brought here from South Carolina.

Crash on SR 120

Emergency responders were at the scene of a crash Monday evening on Ridgway St. Marys Road (state Route 120) in Ridgway Township. Elk Company 4 (Ridgway Fire Department) and Ridgway Ambulance were dispatched to the scene. No additional information was available at press time.

Historical society celebrates St. Marys' founding

On Sunday evening, roughly 100 people gathered at The Red Fern in Fox Township to celebrate the 172nd anniversary of the founding of Sancta Marienstadt–St. Marys–during the 52nd annual banquet of the Historical Society of St. Marys and Benzinger Township.
Each year, the historical society tries to hold the banquet on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of the founding, which occurred Dec. 8, 1842.

Dutch wrestlers open season with Kickoff Classic

The St. Marys Area Dutch wrestling team hosted their fourth annual Kickoff Classic on Saturday at the SMAHS Dutch Oven. This year's tournament featured eight teams, including the Dutchmen, who ended the day in sixth place.

Lady Dutch open season hosting Bishop Guilfoyle Saturday

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team opened their 2014-2015 season Saturday night by playing host to the Bishop Guilfoyle Lady Marauders in a non-league contest.
Bishop Guilfoyle came away with a 64-24 win over the Lady Dutch.

Lady Crusaders open season with win over Ridgway

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team opened their season at home on Friday by hosting the Ridgway Lady Elkers. Elk Catholic came away with a 54-22 victory.

Fox Township celebrates Light Up Night

Fox Township held its annual Light Up Night on Friday evening. This year the event was moved to a new, warmer location inside at the Fox Township Community Building. Santa arrived on a Christmas float featuring a winter scene complete with snowmobiles and escorted by Mrs. Claus and the Grinch. Inside the center children and their families enjoyed hot soup, cookies, hot chocolate and other more. Santa and Mrs. Claus gifted each child with a coloring book and a bag of goodies.

Frances D. Eckert

Frances D. Eckert, 98, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home, and formerly of Bucktail Trail, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, at Elk Haven, on her mother’s birthday.
She was born March 8, 1916 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Pfingstler Dietz. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Leo’s High School, Class of 1934. She was a retired employee of the Stackpole Carbon Company, retiring in 1981 after 28 years of service.
On Aug. 17, 1935 in Portageville, N.Y., she married Herbert G. Eckert, who preceded her in death Feb. 20, 1976.
