Dog passes out from excitement to see owner
The recently formed St. Marys Emergency Management Committee is looking to work closely with the city and local emergency services in becoming more prepared to aid residents in times of emergencies and natural disasters.
"We want to get St. Marys to the point where we're self-sufficient. Where we can handle most incidents that occur within the city," said Councilman Greg Gebauer.
According to Gebauer, the formation of the committee was prompted by the May flooding disaster and having to work with various emergency services within the community.
Memorial Park staff held their first annual Color for a Cause 5K run/walk to raise money for the HPS Network on Saturday morning, and the event exceeded expectations in terms of attendance and money raised.
According to Memorial Park staff member Laura Buchheit, who coordinated the event, nearly 250 people preregistered for the race and roughly another 50 showed up to register the morning of the event.
"I thought we would have way less people, but it made it more fun that we had more people," Buchheit said.
Carol L. VanVoorhis, 73, of Benezette, died Sunday, July 27, 2014 at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital of Pittsburgh after a short illness.
Funeral services for Carol L. VanVoorhis will be held Friday, Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home, Penfield, with Reverend Lola Turnbull.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 31 from 2â€“4 and 6â€“8 p.m. at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home, Penfield, and Friday, Aug. 1 from 10â€“11 a.m. at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home, Penfield

Naomi F. Posteraro, 94, of 436 Ash St., St. Marys, died Friday, July 25, 2014 at the Penn Highlands DuBois after a brief illness.
She was born May 26, 1920, in Brockway, daughter of the late Antonio and Celeste Montanari Berardi. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of the Brockway High School.
On Oct. 25, 1941, in the Saint Tobias Church in Brockway, she married Samuel F. Posteraro who preceded her in death on June 17, 2006.
On Friday a St. Marys man got a little more than he bargained for while treasure hunting and accidentally stumbled upon undetonated explosives.
Tom Morelli of St. Marys purchased a box of items in Emporium while pursuing his hobby of 'picking' for unique pieces. He obtained the box as he was interested in its contents of old Pennsylvania Game News magazines, however upon later inspecting it Morelli came across a smaller box buried inside containing blasting caps and a detonation cord, which Morellli estimated were from the 1930s.
The St. Marys Senior Little League Baseball Senior League All-Stars put together an exciting run, winning the District 10 and Section 1 titles, and reaching the Pa. State Tournament, which was held this year at Showers Field in DuBois. Like all good things though, that run came to an end on Friday afternoon as St. Marys was dealt a 6-1 loss by defending state champion Kennett Square (KAU Little League) and were eliminated from the tournament.
WILCOX â€“ Precision Compacted Components, Inc. is adding a 26,700 square foot addition to their facilities in Wilcox, according to the company's Facilities and Maintenance Manager, Cole Wiesner.
At these facilities, PCC produces sintered metal products, including a variety of parts ranging from general industry parts to automotive parts.
The new additions include a 24,000 square foot addition to existing production facilities, and a 2,700 square foot addition for a maintenance department to support the increased size of the production facilities, Wiesner said.
A one-vehicle rollover crash closed down a portion of Brusselles Street in St. Marys on Friday evening at approximately 9:50 p.m. The crash occurred in the vicinity of 1250 Brusselles St. During the crash the vehicle struck a utility pole, sheering off part of it and knocking down several power lines. A female was pulled from the vehicle with her condition unknown at press time.
The St. Marys Little League Baseball Senior League All-Stars opened play in the Pa. State Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Showers Field in DuBois, taking on Section 3 champion Montoursville. St. Marys was able to keep the game close until the final inning when Montoursville added a few more runs for insurance to claim a 5-1 victory.
