Highland supervisors: We're fighting the lawsuit

JAMES CITY – The Highland Township supervisors voted unanimously on Monday to allow The Community Environmental Defense Fund (CELDF) to proceed in defending the township in a lawsuit over a township ordinance regulating injection wells.
The decision came after a 30-minute public meeting in which the township supervisors and approximately 25 residents of the township and the county were able to voice their opinion on what should be done with the lawsuit.

Crusaders defeat Vikings 56-48 in D9 consolation game

It was back to business as usual for the Elk County Catholic Crusaders on Saturday afternoon at Clarion University. Three days after falling to Clarion-Limestone in the District 9 Class A semifinals, the Crusaders got back into the win column after battling the Venango Catholic Vikings throughout a close game, winning by eight, 56-48, to enter the PIAA Class A playoffs as the third seed from District 9.

Business Expo welcomes steady crowd at new location

The St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo welcomed a steady crowd throughout Saturday. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., attendees visited the expo at its new location at the Sacred Heart Parish Center in downtown St. Marys. The expo featured about 40 vendors from throughout the region, five business seminars, a mini health fair hosted by Penn Highlands Elk, homemade soup, sandwiches, bread and sweets by the Sacred Heart Social Committee, a 'Shop Local' prize package as well as numerous door prizes.

The weeklong sweet 16th birthday celebration of the Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous reached its high note Saturday with the annual auction attended by a large crowd.
Auctioneers auctioned off a wide variety of artistic creations throughout Saturday at the annual event on Court Street in downtown Ridgway.

Alice Brem, 85, of 111 Taylor St., Kersey, died Sunday, March 1, 2015 at her residence after a lengthy illness.
She was born Oct. 27, 1929 in Toby, daughter of the late Innocente (Ernest) and Louise Cesa Comiotti.
On Nov. 11, 1950, in the Guardian Angels Church in Coal Hollow, she married Maurice M. Brem, who preceded her in death on April 1, 1983.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Kersey High School, Class of 1947. She was an employee of Automatic Turning and Machining until her illness in 2011.

Lady Crusaders down Lady Raiders 61-45 in D9-A consolation game

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders defeated the Cameron County Lady Raiders by a 61-45 score Friday night in the District 9 Class A girls consolation game played at the St. Marys Area Dutch Oven.
Both teams will advance to the PIAA Class A Tournament which opens next Saturday, March 7. Elk Catholic will meet the District 10 champion while Cameron County will meet the District 6 champion.

Fire destroys Straub maintenance building

A fire Friday morning broke out on the Straub Brewery property in St. Marys and destroyed a structure utilized as a maintenance and storage building.
Elk Company 1 (Crystal Fire Department) and St. Marys Ambulance were dispatched at 9:16 a.m. for a report of a structure fire at a commercial industry site at 303 Sorg St. in St. Marys.
"Upon arrival we found that the maintenance storage building was fully involved so at that time we called for mutual aid from Fox Township, Ridgway and Johnsonburg," said Tom Bauer, public relations representative for Crystal Fire Department.
