Lady Dutch win Elk County Softball Tournament

It was fitting that a long day at Knothole Park was made a little longer by extra innings.
St. Marys didn't mind playing the extra two innings.
The Lady Dutch scored two runs in the ninth inning to win 4-2 over Elk County Catholic in the Elk County Softball Tournament championship game Friday night at Knothole Park in Johnsonburg.

St. Marys Area rallies for 5-3 win over Johnsonburg

The Johnsonburg Rams went into the seventh inning of Friday's opening round game in the Elk County Baseball Tournament leading St. Marys Area 3-2 and needing just three outs to advance to today's title game. They got them, but not before the Dutchmen were able to score three runs to rally for a 5-3 victory.

Crusaders reach County tourney finals with win over Kane

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team used a 14-hit attack to defeat the Kane Wolves 15-0 in three innings in the opening game of the Elk County Baseball Tournament being played at Berwind Park.

Dutchmen rally for 4-3 win over Tide in 10 innings

Dutchman R.J. Johnston's single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Kirkland McClain from second base to give the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen a 4-3, 10-inning win over the Curwensville Golden Tide.

Crusader tennis defeats St. Marys 8-1

Amid an occasional drizzle on a cool and cloudy Thursday afternoon, the St. Marys Area and Elk County Catholic boys' tennis teams faced off once again, this time at the St. Marys Area High School tennis courts. Both teams played well, but the Crusaders came away with the 8-1 victory to improve to 11-2 on the year.

Mayor proposes PHE rep to update council on hospital activity

St. Marys Mayor Bob Howard proposed inviting a Penn Highlands Elk representative to a council meeting to explain in more details some of the activity taking place at the hospital which will allow council an opportunity to ask questions.
Howard recently attended a meeting at PHE where CEO Rose Campbell explained their move to a critical access hospital (CAH), which are typically rural community hospitals according to the American Hospital Association.
"The hospital has been losing money historically for the last number of years," Howard said.

Civil War encampment being held Friday at St. Marys Area Middle School

For the past 15 years, St. Marys Area Middle School has paid homage to the Civil War during annual encampments held at the school. The school's Civil War Club, under the director of teacher Cherri Gigliotti, hosts the event.
Gigliotti said this year's encampment is slated to be the school's biggest yet in terms of the number of activities and reenactors.
Students have the opportunity to experience what life was like during the Civil War era by visiting 11 stations situated inside and outside of the school, each focusing on a different aspect of the time period.

Tom Aiello of Kane ends long career as firefighter instructor

KANE – Tom Aiello of Kane is proud of his legacy.
By taking part in training classes taught by Aiello, thousands of volunteer firefighters across Pennsylvania and nearby states have learned the proper techniques for fighting structure fires.
Aiello, a longtime volunteer firefighter himself, has been a state-certified fire instructor since 1969. He is retiring with the title of senior master instructor-- the highest level given in the state. He now is referred to as fire instructor emeritus.

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders defeated the Curwensville Golden Tide 11-1 on a walk-off single by Ryan Heary with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park.
