SMAHS students inducted into National Honor Society

On Tuesday evening, the academic excellence of St. Marys Area High School juniors and seniors was celebrated as students were inducted into the National Honor Society.
Among those honored were 35 first-year junior members, 33 second-year senior members and one senior who was a first-year member.
A dinner program was held prior to the start of the event where SMAHS student Scott Barber, master of ceremonies, was joined by fellow student Erica Bauer, who led the invocation.

Michael P. Vollmer

Michael P. Vollmer, 66, of 548 Fernwood Road, Houtzdale, and formerly of St. Marys died unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, March 20, 2012.
He was born June 3, 1945 in St. Marys, a son of the late Thomas and Kathryn Vollmer.
He was married to the late Dolores Vollmer.

Concerns aired about growing elk herd

RIDGWAY - Fran Gustafson, a Jay Township supervisor, shared concerns about the growing elk herd Tuesday morning during an Elk County Commissioners meeting.
"It's getting bad-- they're eating the grass, people can't have gardens, they can't do anything," Gustafson said. "I don't know where this is going to lead. It's now becoming a county thing, not a township thing, and it has spread and spread."
According to Gustafson, there have been at least three vehicle accidents in the past month, with three vehicles being totaled, due to the elk presence.

Monitoring Project acts as an alarm system

Elk County Conservation District Watershed Specialist Kim Bonfardine attended Monday night's regular meeting to update the board on the status of the Elk County Monitoring Project.
The project is designed to collect baseline data throughout Elk County and will act as an alarm system for pollution events that may occur in drinking water supply areas.
In March, 2011 the Elk County Conservation District received two grants totaling $211,000 for water monitoring equipment for water quality assessments throughout the county.

Marcellus opposition concerns voiced

RIDGWAY - Elk County Commissioners were immersed in a 35-minute conversation Tuesday morning with township supervisors and county officials over Marcellus Shale issues, specifically land issues and the fallout from an ordinance passed two weeks ago regarding impact fees on the wells.
"Land use and zoning issues have always been something that comes with much controversy," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg during the lengthy discussion. "Until there is a consensus made by the public, it's a hard thing to make a blatant statement on.

Heritage Gala to honor Benedictine sisters

The Elk County Catholic School System's 4th Annual Heritage Gala will celebrate Catholic education in St. Marys and pay homage to the Benedictine sisters who have been instrumental to these efforts over the years.
The gala will take place Friday, March 30 at The Red Fern. Hosted by the Elk County Catholic School System Advancement Office in partnership with O'Leary Giovanni Wealth Management Group and The Red Fern, this year's theme is "Reach for the Stars."

James B. Marshall

James B. Marshall, 87, of Elk Haven Nursing Home, died Monday, March 19, 2012, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Nov. 3, 1924, in Lock Haven, the son of the late Frank and Shirley N. Vierrier Marshall. He was a loving husband to Lucille Hostetlar for 65 years; she survives. James was Methodist by faith. He had served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during WWII. In the military, he had extensive culinary arts training. He had been employed at his family-owned Marshall Laboratory and at Ridgway Color and Chemical.

Pip advances on 'The Voice'

ST. MARYS - Pip, the talented 19-year-old Georgia native with local ties, beat out his friend Nathan Parrett last night on 'The Voice' to advance to the live rounds of the show which will start in April.

Mary E. Johnson

March 19, 2012

Mary E. Johnson, 94, of Hickory Street, Ridgway, died on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born February 16, 1918, in Cuneo, the daughter of the late Perry D. and Bertha Riley Clark. She married Arthur J. Johnson, who predeceased her on April 18, 1992. Mrs. Johnson had resided most of her life in Ridgway. She was a devoted, long-time member of the Ridgway Church of Christ. During the Korean Conflict, Mary worked at Stackpole Carbon Company, but the majority of her life was devoted to her family, whom she enjoyed very much. Her family will miss her dearly.
