The St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors approved several personnel issues at this monthâs regular meeting.
All employment recommendations are provisional for 30 days pending receipt of Act 151 and Act 34 clearance documentation and pre-employment drug testing if applicable.
The board approved to change the substitute pay rate effective with the 2011-12 school year. Days 1-30 will be at $80/day, days 31-60 will be at $85/day and over 60 days will be at $90/day.

St. Marys Areaâs Kayla Hoohuli has been named a member of the 40-member âPARADE All Americaâ girlsâ basketball team.
Hoohuli joins 39 high school basketball seniors from 30 states on a list compiled by âPARADE Magazineâ and âSporting Newsâ.
In her four years at St. Marys Area, Kayla led her team to four consecutive District 9 Class AAA championships.
At the conclusion of the 2010-2011 season, Kayla was named the Pennsylvania girlsâ basketball Class AAA Player of the Year in a vote by the state sportswriters.
The St. Marys Lady Dutch pulled out to a big lead with two strong innings and went on to a 17-3, 5-inning win over Ridgway Friday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
St. Marys had four runs in the first inning and seven in the second inning to pull out to an 11-0 lead and take control of the game.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team evened their record at 8-8 with a 14-3, five inning win over the Ridgway Elkers Friday at Berwind Park.
The Dutch scored a total of 10 runs in the third and fourth innings to put the game away.
âNow is the right time for us to start meshing and we really are,â said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato.
âWe knew as a staff what this team is capable of and now we are seeing it. We have seen improvement all year and now theyâre getting it together at the right time,â said Azzato.
âWe played well today and Iâm happy with that,â added Azzato.
Bucktail Lodge 96 and William Hanley Lodge 67 of the Fraternal Order of Police conducted their annual Fallen Officers Memorial Service on Friday afternoon in the auditorium of Elk County Catholic High School. The event is held at a different location each year on or around May 15, which is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and also corresponds with Police Week.
Parishioners, students, teachers, parents and alumni gathered together on Saturday evening in celebration of the 125th anniversary of St. Boniface Catholic School and Parish, located along Main Street in Kersey, Fox Township.
The anniversary celebration began with a Mass at 5 p.m., followed by a dinner held inside the school cafeteria.
St. Boniface School Principal Marie Giazzoni welcomed all in attendance, including the Most Rev. Donald Trautman, bishop of the Erie Diocese.
Elk County C.A.R.E.S. hosted "A Community Meeting" Friday evening at the Ridgway Area High School cafeteria for the public to discuss the ongoing concern over the Marcellus Shale drilling.
Johnsonburg Area High School chemistry teacher David Keith began the meeting with a PowerPoint presentation outlining the history, outlook and risks associated with the gas well drilling.
According to Keith, the first hydraulic fractured well was drilled in Pennsylvania by Range Resources in 2003.
Herbert R. "Red" Geyer, 94, of 405 Center St., St. Marys, died at Elk Regional Health Center on Sunday, May 15, 2011 following a short illness.
He was born Nov. 5, 1916 in St. Marys, a son of the late Albert and Matilda Bauer Geyer.
On May 17, 1941 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, he married Rita Seifert Geyer, who survives.

Janice S. Wilson, 74, of West Center Street, Johnsonburg, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor following a brief illness.
She was born October 2, 1936 in Ridgway, son of the late Leo âPatâ and Carolyn (Harriger) Divany.

Officials in the Pheasants Forever Chapter 630 are hard at work fundraising to create an endowment for assisting in this year's Youth Outdoor Adventure scheduled for Sept. 16-18.
"It all started with a dream to take local terminally ill or permanently disabled youth on outdoor adventures," said Jane Bryndel, a Pheasants Forever Chapter 630 member and treasurer also charged with publicity responsibilities.
"We feel we are ready for our first event this September. These events will be a unique experience to the selectee, and will provide a fulfilling and memorable experience to the family."
