Emma Scarano Hau

September 23, 2012

Emma Scarano Hau, 89, of 603 North West St., Coudersport, died Saturday night, Sept. 22, 2012 at her residence following a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 25, 1923, in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Vincent and Josephine Cerro Scarano.
On July 10, 1953 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, she married William J. Hau, who preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 2007.
Formerly of Johnsonburg, she resided in Coudersport for the past three years. She graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1941, graduated from Villa Maria College in Erie, and attended Temple University in Philadelphia.

Dutchmen shut out Clarion-Limestone Lions 35-0

STRATTANVILLE - The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team shut out the Clarion-Limestone Lions by a 35-0 score Friday night.
The Dutchmen scored on four of their first five possessions last night to build a 28-0 halftime lead.
The Dutch scored early in the third period to take a 35-0 lead and put the mercy rule into effect.
“This was a good rebound for us after last week’s loss,” said St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm. “We were up against an undermanned team and I feel for them.”

Crusaders take 28-6 homecoming win over Ridgway

The Elk County Catholic Crusader football team recorded a 28-6 homecoming victory over the Ridgway Elkers on Friday evening at Dutch Country Stadium in St. Marys.
The rain held off until just after the midpoint of the third quarter, allowing for dry weather for the Crusaders' homecoming festivities at halftime. Despite the change in the weather, both teams did a good job holding onto the ball and the rain seemed to have little impact on the game.
ECC coach Travis Skrzypek remarked that he was pleased with his squad's play throughout the game.

Entry-level powder metal program offered again

The first “Fit for Powder Metal Program” entry-level course recently offered to area residents was very successful, and organizers will be offering the seven-week program again in October.

Fall Fest kicks off

Members of the 2012 Bavarian Fall Fest committee were in attendance for the opening ceremony. Lady Crusaders down Lady Elkers in volleyball, 3-1

Elk County Catholic volleyball won 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 25-21) over Ridgway Thursday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway coach Janet Redmond said the Lady Elkers played well and played with determination.

Lady Dutch tennis team defeats Punxsutawney 5-4

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team handed the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks a 5-4 loss Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS tennis courts.
At first singles, SMA’s Amy Orr defeated Amber Ward 6-1, 6-0.
Aubrey Wiesner of SMA defeated Lauren Wolfe 6-1, 6-1 at second singles.
At third singles, Kylie Krise of Punxsy defeated Danielle McCoy 6-0, 6-0.
At fourth singles, Jaelene Burkett of Punxsy defeated Megan McCoy 6-0, 6-0.
At fifth singles, Punxsy’s Laura Chelgren defeated Madison Squires, who was playing in her first singles match, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).

Jay Board schedules special meeting

The Jay Township Board of Supervisors at Thursday's meeting set a date for a special meeting to approve the board's backing of a $107,000 loan for the township's water authority to implement improvements to the township's water treatment plant.
Supervisor Jeremy Rippey said the board's official adoption of an ordinance guaranteeing the loan was scheduled for Thursday's meeting but needed to be pushed back after a clerical issue arose with the loan paperwork submitted to the bank.

ECHS files suit against former treasurer

ST. MARYS - The Elk County Humane Society has filed suit against its former treasurer, Richard A. Danz, 47, of 376 Walnut St., St. Marys, alleging he siphoned funds from the nonprofit corporation's financial accounts into his own personal bank account, as well as those of his financial and tax business located at 210 Brusselles St. in St. Marys.

Virginia A. Galdini, 50, of 213 Old Kane Rd., Wilcox, died Thursday morning, Sept. 20, 2012 at her residence following a lengthy illness.
She was born Oct. 13, 1961 in Kane, daughter of the late Richard and Shirley Polinski Disque. She married Reynold "Reno" Galdini on Sept. 11, 1982 in the Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg; he survives.
