ECC’s Scott Krellner and Alex Herzing wins 9-AA doubles crown

Elk County Catholic’s Scott Krellner and Alex Herzing captured the District 9-AA tennis doubles championship at DuBois on Wednesday.
In the championship match, Krellner and Herzing defeated St. Marys Area’s Dalton Gennocro and Jarrod Lipsey 6-3, 7-5.
Krellner and Herzing reached the championship match by defeating Johnsonburg’s Shane Bickford and Nate Field 8-2 in the first round. In the quarterfinals they defeated Alec Bouch and Fabio Fortunato of Brockway 10-8. In the semifinals they defeated St. Marys Area’s Michael Fox and Evan Lepovetsky 6-4, 6-3.

Dutchmen pick up 5-1 victory over Bradford Owls

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen recorded a 5-1 victory over the Bradford Owls on Wednesday afternoon at Berwind Park in St. Marys.
The Dutchmen scored twice in the second and added three more runs in the sixth while allowing the Owls to get one run in the seventh.
"It was a win," said St. Marys Area coach Tony Azzato. "We came out a little lazy the first couple innings. We were back on our heels a little bit in the box and on the field, but pitching has been keeping us in the past three games and it did again today."

ECC honors athletes at Spring Athletic Awards Program

The Elk County Catholic High School 2011-2012 Spring Athletic Awards Program was held on Tuesday evening in the ECCHS auditorium.
ECC Athletic Director Aaron Straub offered some brief opening remarks before turning the microphone over to Fr. Ross Miceli, who gave the invocation. ECC Athletic Association President Chris Schneider delivered a short welcome and Straub added a few acknowledgments to start off the program.

T-Bones Off Road Club plans ride

Members of the T-Bones Off Road Club are planning their third annual "Go Topless Litter Pickin' Jeep Ride" scheduled for Saturday, May 19.
"We will be meeting at Sandy Beach in Ridgway at 9 a.m. with the cleanup to begin at 10 a.m.," said Kellie Mocik, one of the event's organizers. "The public is invited to attend and there is no fee to volunteer, and donations will be collected for the Elk County Humane Society.
"They can always use towels, blankets, toys for the shelter animals, rubber gloves, air fresheners, paper towels, Dawn dish soap and monetary donations are always appreciated."

New child care center offers variety, security

A new child care center opening in St. Marys will offer Elk County parents another quality option for their children’s needs.
A Step Ahead Child Center is located at the Elcam, Inc. building at 189 West Creek Rd. The 4,491-square-foot facility boasts separate areas for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children, and is designed to help them develop learning skills through play and a defined curriculum developed by Director Naomi A. Tucker and her staff. Every facet of the new facility was labored over during months of planning, even down to the name, according to Tucker.

SMASD approves personnel items

At Monday's meeting of the St. Marys Area Board of School Directors, the board approved a number of new personnel items on the agenda.
All employment recommendations are provisional for 30 days pending receipt of Act 151 and Act 34 clearance documentation.
The following professional resignations were accepted: Nancy DaMore, of St. Marys, as librarian-SMAMS, effective June 1, 2012.
The following professional personnel transfers were approved: Tiffany Gump, of St. Marys, from part-time to full-time teacher, effective Aug. 22, 3012.

County Special Olympics competition held at SMAHS

ST. MARYS - Students from both Elk and Cameron counties competed in the Special Olympics track and field meet held at Dutch Country Stadium on Tuesday.
Event organizers Nancy Hoffman, life skills teacher at St. Marys Area High School, and Angie Sorg, physical therapist for Seneca Highlands Intermediate Unit 9, which services Elk, McKean, and Potter counties, said the event is an opportunity for many special needs children and adults to have "their moment to shine."

Lady Dutch softball shuts out Brookville Lady Raiders 9-0

SMA travels to Bradford today

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team raised their record on the season to 12-4 with a 9-0 victory over the Brookville Lady Raiders Tuesday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
The Lady Dutch return to action this afternoon when they travel to Bradford to take on the Lady Owls at 4:15 p.m.

Crusaders defeat Curwensville 11-2 on senior night

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders picked up an 11-2 senior night victory over the Curwensville Golden Tide on Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park in St. Marys.
"The sticks were alive tonight," said ECC coach Tom Zampogna. "They hit the ball very well, probably the best they've hit the baseball all year. Defensively, they played heads up. They played a good defensive game."

No tax increase for SMASD residents

Property taxes will not be raised for residents of the St. Marys Area School District for the 2012 - 2013 fiscal year, according to SMASD Superintendent Ann Kearney.
At Thursday's meeting of the SMASD Board of Directors, Kearney said the district will be able to continue reducing property taxes for the 2012-2013 school year as a result of the distribution of state gaming funds through the Taxpayer Relief Act, also known as Special Session Act 1 of 2006.
