Joanne T. Wendel, 69, of 185 Center St., Elk Towers, and formerly of Newton, N.C., died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh after a lengthy illness.
She was born April 13, 1943 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Andrew and Rosa Turcotte Meyer.
She was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1961 and a graduate of the Clearfield School of Nursing. She worked for many years in healthcare and also worked in landscaping.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and enjoyed gardening, crafts and rock ‘n roll music. She also loved her cats.

Rose Mary “Rosie” Brunner

Rose Mary “Rosie” Brunner, 90, a resident of St. John’s Specialty Care Center in Mars for the past five months and formerly of 301 Erie Ave. and Silver Creek Terrace in St. Marys, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at the UPMC Passavant Hospital in Pittsburgh after a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 30, 1922 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Frank and Margaret Farrell Duffy. On Oct. 5, 1953 in the St. Leo’s Church in Ridgway, she married James F. Brunner, who preceded her in death on June 23, 2004.

Clearfield eliminates Dutch wrestling from D9-AAA team tourney

The Clearfield Area Bison wrestling squad eliminated the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestlers from the District 9-AAA team wrestling championships on Saturday by a 41-31 score in the semifinals held at the DuBois Area High School.

Sidney D. Himes, 46, of Johnsonburg, died suddenly on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013 at a friend's home in Kane.
Born April 23, 1966 in St. Marys to the late Bernard W. and Julia C. (Rider) Himes, Sidney was a farmer who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, and was an avid artist.
Sidney is survived by three brothers, Harvey Himes of Ridgway, Clarence Himes of Johnsonburg, and David Himes of Johnsonburg; a sister, Alberta Short of Genesee, N.Y.; an aunt, Mary Ellen and her husband Glenn Hess of Bradford; and numerous nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Gayle M. Day, 69, of 759 Johnsonburg Rd., St. Marys, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 27, 1943 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Isadore and Esther Hanes. In 1971, in Ridgway, she married James Day, who preceded her in death on March 26, 1992.
Mrs. Day was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. She was a member of the Queen of the World Church. She enjoyed playing cards and baking, and she had a great sense of humor.

Phil predicts an early spring

Thousands of fans watched as Pennsylvania's world-famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil made his highly anticipated weather prognostication on Saturday, commemorating 127 years of Pennsylvania's unique Groundhog Day tradition.
Phil predicted an early spring after emerging from his burrow without seeing his shadow Saturday morning in the Pennsylvania Wilds.
According to holiday folklore, if the groundhog emerges in the early morning on Feb. 2 and does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring. If he sees his shadow, six more weeks of wintry weather are expected.

Alfred Edward Cheatle, 80, of 638 Virginia Rd., St. Marys, died Thursday evening, Jan. 31, 2013 at the Elk Haven Nursing Home after an illness of the past year.
He was born Sept. 2, 1932 in St. Marys, son of the late Frank and Catherine Caskey Cheatle. On May 25, 1957, in the Queen of the World Church, he married Doris T. Smith, who preceded him in death on Aug. 26, 2001.
