Look Good Feel Better continues to offer support

ST. MARYS – Local St. Marys salon Shear Envy and its owner and stylist Cari Wortman teach the American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better program to help women battling cancer improve their appearance and self-image.
“The program helps women understand the changes in their hair and skin that may occur during treatment,” Wortman said. “This helps the patients overcome the appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.”
Wortman began offering the program six years ago because she loves reaching out and helping others.

More work on veterans' monuments

After doing extensive work at the Protestant Cemetery over the past few weeks, Don "Flip" Bobenrieth of St. Marys Monuments and Bill Schatz of Schatz's Lawn and Wall Installation and their crews headed over the the St. Mary's Catholic cemetery to install the second of the two monuments that will honor area veterans.

Shirley Mae Nedza-McNulty, 63, of DuBois, died suddenly on Monday, April 30, 2012 at DRMC.
She was born May 2, 1948 in DuBois, daughter of Catherine (Narvey) Nedza and the late George Nedza.
She worked as a registered nurse for over 40 years and was one of the first paramedics in the area. Most recently, she served as funeral home supervisor for the Ubel Funeral Home in Johnsonburg, where she worked with her nephew Joseph M. Nedza since 2005, along with assisting her family at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home in Penfield and The Leo Nedza Funeral Homes of DuBois and Sykesville.

Lady Crusaders defeat Lady Rams 12-1 in five innings

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader girls' softball team recorded a 12-1 victory over the Johnsonburg Lady Rams in a five-inning game played on Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
"I'm really happy with it (the game) today," said Johnsonburg coach Jenny Lewis. "I think we showed a lot of improvement since last game. We lost 20-0 last game, and to come out and almost play a whole game [where we] had several hits, different girls on base, [and] we scored a run, we're coming along."
Taylor Schlimm went the distance for ECC, giving up two hits and striking out eight.

Dutch thinclads sweep Johnsonburg, Clearfield squads

The St. Marys Area track and field teams played host to the Johnsonburg and Clearfield squads on Tuesday at Dutch Country Stadium.
The Dutchmen swept their meets, defeating Johnsonburg 120-30 and Clearfield 109.25 to 39.75.
The Lady Dutch lost to the Ramettes 90-44 and to the Lady Bisons 88-53.
For the Dutchmen against the Rams, Jimmy Werner was a triple winner, taking the shot put, discus and javelin.

Elk Catholic track teams split with DCC, Bradford

The Elk County Catholic track and field teams split with squads from Bradford and DuBois Central Catholic in a double dual meet held Tuesday afternoon at the ECCHS track and field complex.
The Lady Crusaders defeated the Lady Cardinals 115-29, but fell to the Lady Owls 85-65. The Crusaders recorded a 124-15 victory over the Cardinals and lost to the Owls 106-44.

Rams win sensational pitching duel 1-0 over ECC

JOHNSONBURG – It wasn't pretty but the Johnsonburg Rams extended their winning streak to 11-0 on the season with a 1-0 shutout win Tuesday over visiting Elk County Catholic (8-4).
The Rams combined three pitchers for seven innings of work and overcame six walks as they effectively scattered three hits while Johnsonburg pushed a run across in the second inning.
Johnsonburg starting pitcher Quinn Luhr, who was 2-for-2 on the day with a walk and a run scored, led off the bottom of the second inning with an infield single to ECC shortstop Dan Singer to put a runner aboard with no outs.

Punxsutawney rallies to edge Dutchmen 7-5

The Punxsutawney Chucks scored four runs in the top half of the seventh inning, then limited the Dutch to two runs in the home half of the inning to escape with a 7-5 victory Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park.
Punxsy took the 3-0 lead after three innings of play. The Dutch battled back to score two in the fifth and one in the sixth to even the game at 3-all. Then came the seventh, with the Chucks outscoring the Dutch 4-2 to win the game.

SMAMS students put right foot forward helping others

The 7th grade classes at St. Marys Area Middle School have put their hearts and "soles" into helping victims of natural disasters through a recent sneaker collection. The students are participating in the Annual National Sneaker Drive, which will assist people across the country who have been affected by everything from tornadoes to Hurricane Irene.
