Lioness Club holding 25th annual fundraiser

FOX TWP. - In order to continue its mission of service wherever needed, the Fox Township Lioness Club will be holding its longtime annual fundraiser this Saturday at the Fox Township Community Building. Now in its 25th year, the Lioness Club Chinese Auction will be held beginning at noon on Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Kersey Community Building.

Local man sentenced in methamphetamine lab bust

RIDGWAY - A local man charged with operating a methamphetamine lab out of a Johnsonburg home was sentenced Monday in Elk County Court to serve 5 to 10 years in state prison.
Justin Edward Greene, 26, of Johnsonburg, accepted a plea agreement and in turn pled guilty to a charge of possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance.

Council receives update on SR 255 project

ST. MARYS - Area motorists are being asked for their patience as the massive multi-year road project along state Route 255 continues. Although the project is only in its first phase, many items of concern were posed to Dean Ball of the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) during Monday evening's St. Marys City Council meeting.
Ball provided a brief update and answered questions from council, specifically pertaining to traffic backups along the Million Dollar Highway.

Milliard appeals for bail reduction

RIDGWAY - A Ridgway man incarcerated since July 24 on arson and related charges, as well as charges of attempted murder and assault, was in Elk County Court Monday appealing for a reduction in bail so that he may be released from jail and return home while awaiting trial.
Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, of 76 Long Level Rd., Ridgway, waived arraignment and entered not guilty pleas Monday in five separate cases against him, including a 2010 Ridgway arson, a 2008 Johnsonburg arson, the assault of a Ridgway man, firearms possession by a convicted felon, and a drug offense.

Area fire departments simulate big-rig accidents

BRANDY CAMP - Members of area fire departments gathered at D&T Towing and Recovery in Brandy Camp over the weekend for a technical heavy truck extrication class.
After coursework and discussion on Saturday, members of Crystal, Fox Township, Jay Township and Brockway fire departments got a chance to put into practice what they learned during simulations of passenger vehicles colliding with a tractor-trailer and a tanker truck.

Highland supervisor is charged in sewage issue

HIGHLAND TWP. - A longtime Highland Township supervisor has been charged with environmental law violations while serving as the certified operator of the James City sewage treatment plant.
Charlie Vaughn, 75, chairman of the township Board of Supervisors, until recently served as the state-certified operator at the sewage plant in James City. He resigned within the past few months.
According to a statement issued Monday by Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly, Vaughn is accused of filing "falsified environmental reports" with the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). 

Gertrude “Gerty” Fitch

Gertrude “Gerty” Fitch, age 85, of Terra Cotta Road, Johnsonburg, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2012 at the Lutheran Home at Kane after an illness of the past six months.
She was born Oct. 9, 1926 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late John and Julia (Bedner) Raubenstrauch
On Oct. 19, 1946, she married Fred D. Fitch; he preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 2006.

Kristy Hanes runner-up in D9-AA Girls' Golf Championship

BROOKVILLE – For the second year in a row, Elk County Catholic High School's Kristy Hanes finished in the runner-up spot among the Class AA golfers in the District 9 Girls' Golf Championship, three strokes behind the leader.
The scenario was unfortunately a familiar one for Hanes, who tied for second last year with Union's Larissa Roberts while coming in three strokes behind Redbank Valley's Samantha Dinger.
In this year's event, which was held at Pinecrest Country Club in Brookville, Hanes carded an 88 on the day, while Keystone's Amber Hess shot an 85 to take the title.

Rams’ Grumley wins 9-AA golf title; ECC’s Eliott Struble takes second

Johnsonburg’s Cameron Grumley captured the District 9-AA individual golf championship on Saturday at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course, with Elk County Catholic’s Elliott Struble placing second.
After Monday’s first round, Struble and Josh Roselli of Ridgway had a two-stroke lead over Grumley. Struble and Roselli both shot 75s on Monday, while Grumley had a 77.

Dutch soccer downs Smethport Hubbers 6-3 Saturday

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch soccer team raised their record to 5-6 on the season with a 6-3 victory over the Smethport Hubbers Saturday at the SMAHS soccer field.
The Dutch took control of the game early as they opened a 3-0 lead in the first 11 minutes of the contest.
The scoring started with 37:50 left in the first half when Tim Mosebarger scored for the Dutch, giving St. Marys the early 1-0 lead.
At the 35:22 mark, Dutchman Josh Burns made the score 2-0 when he scored off a corner kick by Jarrod Lipsey.
