Donald V. Reed

January 28, 2013

Donald V. Reed, 81, formerly of Ridge Road in Kersey, died on Sunday, Jan, 27, 2013 at Pinecrest Nursing Home in St. Marys.
He was born on Jan. 18, 1932 in Bradford, son of the late Richard and Mary Charnisky Reed.
Donald was Protestant by faith. He had been employed at Speer Carbon in St. Marys.
He is survived by one brother, William F. (Dorothy) Reed of Kersey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Milton, Marvin and Raymond Reed; and one sister, Clara Anderson.

Kathleen J. “Kay” Caliari

Kathleen J. “Kay” Caliari, 75, of Hoovertown Road in Penfield, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
Born on Oct. 11, 1937 in Elk County, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Florence (Mosier) Harvey.
She was married to Irvin L. Caliari. He preceded her in death on May 9, 2003.
She retired from Brockway Glass after over 30 years of service. She also worked at Paws & Claws Pet Grooming in Penfield. She enjoyed her horses and her dogs and going to the casino in Salamanca.

Sally J. Antoine

Sally J. Antoine, 63, of 1104 Gordon St., Natrona Heights, died at the home of her daughter at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 following an illness of the past several months.
She was born in Allegheny County, Harrison Township, on June 6, 1949, the daughter of Gertrude Sherrieb and the late Blaine Anderson.
She resided in Harrison Township for most of her life and graduated from Har-Brack High School, Class of 1967. She was employed as an administrative assistant for UPMC Heritage Place, Shadyside. She enjoyed crafts and craft shows, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders held on for a 38-34 Allegheny Mountain League over the Johnsonburg Ramettes Saturday night at the ECCHS gym.

Once again the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce and The River 98.9 radio station are teaming up to host the 2013 Business Expo taking place Saturday, Feb. 23 at The Red Fern in St. Marys.

District Band students perform to packed house

On Friday evening, 165 music students from 41 schools throughout the area performed in the PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) District II Band Festival concert. Elk County Catholic High School was the host of this year's festival, which ran from Jan. 23-25. Dr. Stephen Bolstad, a native of St. Marys and former band director at St. Marys Area High School, was the guest conductor. The band performed seven arrangements.

Area squads compete in ninth annual ECC Cheer Frenzy

The Cheer Frenzy at Elk County Catholic High School had a good turnout once again this year as cheerleaders and spectators packed the ECCHS gymnasium on Saturday for the ninth annual event.

Margaret E. "Peg" Krellner

January 27, 2013

Margaret E. "Peg" Krellner, 95, of 1570 Bucktail Rd., St. Marys, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born Nov. 30, 1917 in Transfer, a daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Gaede Cooney.
Following the death of her mother when Peg was six, she and her younger sister Kathryn and baby brother John lived with Cooney relatives in Genessee. After graduating from Genessee High School, Krellner moved to St. Marys to live with her aunt, Marguerite Wolfe.

David R. Hetrick

David R. Hetrick, 87, of Bennetts Valley Highway, Byrnedale, died very suddenly early Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 at DRMC West.
He was born Nov. 20, 1927 in Byrnedale, son of the late Russell J. and Hilda L. (Johnson) Hetrick. On Aug. 22, 1953 he married Alvera J. Facchine, who survives.
He lived all his life in Bennetts Valley and was a graduate of Weedville High School, Class of 1946.
He served in the U.S. Army during and after WWII (1946-1948) in Alaska, receiving the rank of Tech 4.

Robert Grant Conrad

Robert Grant Conrad, 87, of 49 Brookside Lane, Brookville and previously of New Bethlehem, died at the Brookside Senior Living Center on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013.
He was born April 7, 1925 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Earl Ovid and Susan Reichel Conrad. On May 23, 1949 he married Mary Mielke of Wampum, who preceded him in death in June 2003.
Mr. Conrad was a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and received a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He was employed as a teacher at Redbank Valley High School for 26 years until his retirement in 1978.
