Lady Crusaders down Lady Elkers in volleyball, 3-1

Elk County Catholic volleyball won 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 25-21) over Ridgway Thursday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway coach Janet Redmond said the Lady Elkers played well and played with determination.

Lady Dutch tennis team defeats Punxsutawney 5-4

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team handed the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks a 5-4 loss Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS tennis courts.
At first singles, SMA’s Amy Orr defeated Amber Ward 6-1, 6-0.
Aubrey Wiesner of SMA defeated Lauren Wolfe 6-1, 6-1 at second singles.
At third singles, Kylie Krise of Punxsy defeated Danielle McCoy 6-0, 6-0.
At fourth singles, Jaelene Burkett of Punxsy defeated Megan McCoy 6-0, 6-0.
At fifth singles, Punxsy’s Laura Chelgren defeated Madison Squires, who was playing in her first singles match, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).

Jay Board schedules special meeting

The Jay Township Board of Supervisors at Thursday's meeting set a date for a special meeting to approve the board's backing of a $107,000 loan for the township's water authority to implement improvements to the township's water treatment plant.
Supervisor Jeremy Rippey said the board's official adoption of an ordinance guaranteeing the loan was scheduled for Thursday's meeting but needed to be pushed back after a clerical issue arose with the loan paperwork submitted to the bank.

ECHS files suit against former treasurer

ST. MARYS - The Elk County Humane Society has filed suit against its former treasurer, Richard A. Danz, 47, of 376 Walnut St., St. Marys, alleging he siphoned funds from the nonprofit corporation's financial accounts into his own personal bank account, as well as those of his financial and tax business located at 210 Brusselles St. in St. Marys.

Virginia A. Galdini

Virginia A. Galdini, 50, of 213 Old Kane Rd., Wilcox, died Thursday morning, Sept. 20, 2012 at her residence following a lengthy illness.
She was born Oct. 13, 1961 in Kane, daughter of the late Richard and Shirley Polinski Disque. She married Reynold "Reno" Galdini on Sept. 11, 1982 in the Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg; he survives.

Trail challenge honors Les Haas

Les Haas, a former member of the Elk County Conservation District and Waterways Conservation Officer with the Pa. Fish an Boat Commission, died unexpectedly seven months ago, but his memory will be kept alive Sept. 22 with the 1st Annual Les Haas Memorial Trail Challenge.
The event will be held on the Laurel Mill Ski Trail in the Allegheny National Forest, near Ridgway, on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 9 a.m.

Lady Dutch soccer holds off Port Allegany 4-2

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch soccer team picked up a 4-2 win over Port Allegany on Wednesday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.

Dutch soccer shuts out Kane 4-0 Tuesday afternoon

The St. Marys Area Dutch soccer team added another win to their season record on Tuesday afternoon, shutting out the Kane Wolves 4-0 at the SMAHS soccer field.
"I'm happy for the kids. We were able to score four goals, which was tied with our season high so far," said St. Marys Area coach Russ Micale. "They played a good, solid game the whole time. I'm proud of them."
The Dutchmen also scored four goals in their 4-3 road win over Smethport on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
Dalton Gennocro had two goals for St. Marys in Tuesday's contest, while Jarrod Lipsey and Tim Mosebarger each had one.

Lady Dutch volleyball downs Johnsonburg 3-1

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team defeated the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 3-1 score Tuesday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
St. Marys won the first set by a 25-21 score. They took the second set by a 25-18 score. Johnsonburg won the third set by a 25-21 score. The Lady Dutch won the match by taking the fourth set by a 25-22 score.

Council voices opinion on local events

St. Marys City Councilman Gary Anderson briefly voiced his concern about the Rt. 255 construction project and the frequent traffic jams experienced by local drivers at a recent meeting.
He noted that traffic is sometimes backed up from Walmart to Dairy Queen, causing issues for students and employees attempting to get to work and school on time. Fellow C uncilman Greg Gebauer added emergency vehicles are also having difficulty in getting through traffic.
