Fritz family helping others make beautiful music

If you’ve caught a local high school (musical) performance lately or attended your child’s recital, chances are Fred and Marie Fritz have been behind the scenes making sure the instruments used are hitting the perfect pitch.
The St. Marys couple owns Fritz Pianos and Organs, a family business that began with Fred’s father, the late Hal Fritz, and also included Fred's brother, the late Frank Fritz, who managed the business's DuBois store until his death nine years ago.
Fred said it’s hard for him to imagine doing something else.

St. Marys Major League Baseball all-stars beat Johnsonburg 10-0

JOHNSONBURG – With a dominating performance from Gabe Kraus on the mound, St. Marys Major League All-Stars earned a 10-0 4-inning win over Johnsonburg.
Kraus frustrated the opposition in a 5-strikeout, 1-hit effort.
Meanwhile, St. Marys used a 3-run second inning and 5-run fifth to fuel the shutout victory.
St. Marys got a run across in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Heary reached base with a 2-out single to center field and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kraus reached on an error at shortstop which allowed Heary to score from second for the early 1-0 lead.

Future fireworks may fizzle out if fundraising goal not reached

With less than one week remaining until the annual Independence Day Celebration sponsored by the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, organizers continue to work diligently to drum up donations for the 2012 Fireworks Fund.
The fund currently stands at 63 percent of its $18,000 goal, leaving $6,570.42 yet to be raised.

Protect pets from Lyme disease

It’s not just people who are being affected by increasing levels of Lyme disease—pets need to be protected, too.
Jesse Shirey, DVM, of Elk County Veterinary Clinic, said cases are appearing with increasing frequency in the animal world as well. His latest statistics show that the clinic saw 240 cases of dogs testing positive for Lyme disease from October 2011 to October 2012.
“We see a ton of Lyme disease,” Shirey said. “We see a high incidence.

Warren eliminates St. Marys major softball stars

The St. Marys Little League Softball Major League All-Stars were eliminated from the District 10 tournament Monday evening as they lost a 12-1 contest to the Warren squad at Benzinger Park.
Warren had a total of 12 hits in last night’s contest, while St. Marys was limited to just four.
Getting the four hits for St. Marys were Josie Smith with a triple and a single and Sydney Eckert with two singles.

Fireworks sure to dazzle with debut of new firing system

While fundraising efforts by the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce continue for the 2012 Fireworks Fund, this year's display promises to offer a better overall show with the debut of an electronic firing system.
Starfire Corporation, which has been shooting the St. Marys show since 1988, plans to utilize FireOne, an advanced digital computer program integrating both a firing and choreography system.

Conservation District agrees to noxious weed plan

The Elk County Conservation District will enter into an agreement with the Sinnemahoning Cooperative Weed Management Area to focus an invasive and noxious weed management project primarily within the Sinnemahoning Watershed.
According to District Manager Steve Putt, the Bucktail Watershed Association obtained a grant through the federal government for the weed management project.
Putt noted that he has been working with the Bureau of Forestry, Pa. Game Commission and Sinnemahoning State Park for the past year.

Mary Grace Kriegish

Mary Grace Kriegish, 82, of 409 Willow St., Johnsonburg, died on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at her residence following a lengthy illness.
She was born on July 2, 1929 in Weedville, daughter of the late Ralph and Mary Alice DeLullo.
She married Richard E. Kriegish on Jan. 3, 1948 in St. Joseph Church in Force. He preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1991.
Mrs. Kriegish resided in Johnsonburg since 1947. She graduated from Jay Township High School and from the Ora Jean Beauty School of Erie.

Locals meet Warren tonight at Benzinger Park

The St. Marys Little League Softball Major League All-Star squad stayed alive in the District 10 tournament with a 26-0, four-inning victory over the Brockway squad Saturday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
The St. Marys squad will meet Warren this evening at 6 p.m. at Benzinger Park in an elimination game. Warren eliminated Brookville by a 3-2 score Saturday afternoon.

St. Marys Legion sweeps Port Allegany in doubleheader

The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 squad picked up a pair of victories over Port Allegany on Saturday in a doubleheader played at Berwind Park. St. Marys won the first game 10-0 in five innings, and went on to take a six-inning 15-5 win in the nightcap.
The victories snapped a three-game skid by St. Marys, who dropped a pair of contests to Wilcox earlier in the week and then fell to Smethport on Friday evening.
