Crusader golfers edge Ridgway Elker squad

ST. MARYS – Elk County Catholic edged Ridgway boys' golf, defeating the Elkers via the first tiebreaker in a match held Wednesday afternoon at Bavarian Hills Golf Course.
The two teams tied at 201 strokes with their top five scorers, so the match went to the first tiebreaker which would have been the sixth-best team score. Kristy Hanes shot a 44, while Matt Aiello had a 47, which turned out to be the difference between a win and a loss.

Water quality monitoring continues throughout county

RIDGWAY - Water quality monitoring efforts throughout Elk County are progressing, according to updates given during Tuesday’s meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force.
Steve Putt, director of the Elk County Conservation District, said the county is continuing to monitor water quality in area watersheds and seven of 11 planned satellite telemetry systems to water monitor quality are now “on board.”

Masson praises monument organizers, park

MT. ZION - At the dedication of the monument honoring the famous Bucktails of the Civil War, the Hon. Richard A. Masson, Pa. 59th Judicial District Judge and member of the Bucktail Memorial Committee, praised committee members for their efforts.

Kinzua Bridge festival is slated Saturday and Sunday

MT. JEWETT – Large crowds are expected Saturday and Sunday for the 17th fall festival at the Kinzua Bridge State Park near Mt. Jewett.
The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, rain or shine. Admission is free.
There are 55 craft vendors and 13 food vendors ready to set up at the park. There are activities and displays.
“This festival now holds the record for the largest number of food and craft vendors at the event,” Debbie Lunden said. “There will be plenty to see and do. We have many, many arts and crafts vendors, a great variety of food and musical entertainment.”

For the second time, the Ridgway community has once again been chosen to be featured on "Our Town" on WPSU public television.
The broadcast will air tonight, Thursday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. on channel 3 and online at www.wpsu.org.

Johnsonburg man waives hearing on assault involving firearm

JOHNSONBURG - A Johnsonburg man wanted by police and considered armed and dangerous after fleeing the scene of a domestic dispute on Aug. 16 in which he allegedly threatened the victim's life and his own while brandishing a shotgun, waived his preliminary hearing in District Court on Wednesday.
According to an affidavit, Justin F. Latcovich, 26, of Ridgway, has been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, making terroristic threats, and simple assault following a domestic disturbance at his Center Street home on Aug. 16.

Dolores L. Cuneo

Dolores L. Cuneo, 81, of Madison Street, Byrnedale, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys.
She was born Aug. 16, 1931 in Byrnedale, daughter of the late John and Mary (Darui) DeCarli.
On Aug. 7, 1971, she married Wayne E. Cuneo of Byrnedale, who survives.
Dolores lived all her life in her family home in Byrnedale. She graduated as the valedictorian of Bennetts Valley High School, Class of 1949, and retired from Stackpole Carbon of St. Marys in 1977 after 28 years.

Donald Gruesu

Donald Gruesu died on July 20, 2012 in Carlsbad, Calif.
He was born on Aug. 17, 1964, in Ridgway, the middle son of Joseph and Bernice Gruesu, who survive. He married Patty Dwyer on Oct. 4, 1997 in Newport Beach, Calif.; she survives.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by three sons, Brandon and twins Bayard and Carson; a daughter, Mallorie; a granddaughter, Brooke; and two brothers, Stephen Gruesu and Paul Gruesu.

Elaine I. White

Elaine I. White, 84, of Weedville and recently of Christ the King Manor of DuBois, died late Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 at the Christ the King Manor.
She was born July 6, 1928 in Weedville, daughter of the late George and Frieda (Smith) Martin. She married Raymond Levendusky, who preceded her in death in 1968; and George O. White, who preceded her in death in 1978.
Elaine lived most of her life in Bennetts Valley and recently DuBois, and attended Bennetts Valley schools.
She was a homemaker.

Lady Crusader tennis downs Ramettes 9-0

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team remained undefeated with a 9-0 win over Johnsonburg on Tuesday afternoon in contests played at Benzinger and Memorial parks.
"Today was a near-perfect day for a tennis match against a very nice and greatly improved Johnsonburg squad," said ECC coach Pete Meier. "Both teams played very well and the fans were treated to some very good tennis. It's always fun playing Johnsonburg. They are well-coached, they have nice girls, and they play good tennis."
At first singles, ECC's Laira Reuscher defeated Riley Fannin 6-0, 6-0.
