Lady Crusader volleyball wins County Tournament

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team captured the 16th annual Elk County Volleyball Tournament championship on Saturday by defeating St. Marys Area in the championship match.
Elk Catholic defeated St. Marys in two games, 25-13 and 25-15.
The Ridgway Lady Elkers took third place by defeating the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 30-18 score in the consolation match.

Crusaders win Elk County Soccer Tournament

RIDGWAY — The Elk County Catholic Crusaders won the Elk County Soccer Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Redbank Valley Saturday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
"I think the kids are happy to carry on a tradition," Elk County Catholic coach Adam Bailey said.

Lady Dutch soccer team downs Keystone 9-1

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch soccer team improved their record to 2-0 on the season with a 9-1 victory over the Keystone Lady Panthers Saturday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.
The Lady Dutch jumped out to the early lead as they led 4-0 after the first 10 minutes of play.
Caley Keister scored at the 38:51 mark of the game, giving St. Marys the early 1-0 lead.
Approximately two minutes later, Kaitlyn Barackman gave the Lady Dutch the 2-0 lead at the 36:47 mark.
At the 34:44 mark, Keister scored her second goal as she scored on a direct kick, 3-0.

Robert D. Neal

Robert D. Neal, 70, of 185 Plum Rd., St. Marys, died peacefully early Saturday morning, Sept. 8, 2012 at the home of his daughter surrounded by his family.
He was born March 14, 1942 in Big Run, son of the late Wilbur and Edna Lyle Neal. He attended Big Run schools and had been a resident of St. Marys since 2008. He was a retired electrician.
On June 8, 1963, he married his first wife, Gail Stark Weather, who preceded him in death on March 31, 1973. On Feb. 15, 1975, he married his second wife, Cynthia Duke, who also preceded him in death on April 8, 2012.

George Stephen McClure

George Stephen McClure, 61, of Juniata Street extension, DuBois, died Friday, September 7, 2012 as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Brady Township, Clearfield County.
Born on Nov. 7, 1950 in DuBois, he was the son of the late George H. & Charlotte L. (Youman) McClure.
On May 15, 1982, he married Tara (McIntosh) McClure. She survives.
He was the owner of Glass Unlimited in DuBois and St. Marys.

Leander A. (“Lee”) Hoffman

Leander Anthony “Lee” Hoffman, 89, of 107 Beech Rd., St. Marys, PA, passed away September 7, 2012, at home after a brief illness. He was born January 18, 1923, in St. Marys, son of the late Anthony C. and Marie Sporner Hoffman.
On June 26, 1948, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Betty Jane Hoffman who passed away on June 11, 2011, just weeks shy of their 63rd wedding anniversary.
Lee was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Parochial School.

ECC has seen many changes over the past 50 years

Fifty years ago today, on Monday, Sept. 10, 1962, Elk County Christian High School officially opened its doors to students for the first time, replacing Central Catholic High School.
The newly constructed high school was under the direction of Headmaster Rev. Daniel J. Martin and boasted an enrollment of 725 students and a faculty of 40 teachers.

Hunt of a Lifetime benefit planned for Sept. 22-23

The Bucktail Archers Association is currently gearing up for its second biannual, and third overall, benefit event to raise funds for the Hunt of a Lifetime Foundation, Inc. The group, in conjunction with the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club and Bowfishing Association of America, will be holding a variety of activities at the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club, located at 1339 Glen Hazel Rd. in St. Marys, on Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23.

Lingering concerns surround new assessment exams

MARYS - With the Keystone Exams, a new statewide assessment, to be implemented in Pennsylvania schools this year, concerns surrounding the rigors of testing facing its student body and the logistics of prepping student performance on the exams, an eventual requirement for graduation, were discussed by the St. Marys Area School District's board of directors at Thursday's workshop meeting.
