Jane C. Bebble Lecker

May 28, 2012

Jane C. Bebble Lecker, 96, of 318 John St., St. Marys, where she made her home with her daughter, and formerly of Elk Towers, died on Sunday, May 27, 2012.
She was born April 21, 1916 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Charles and Mildred Tierney Bebble.
On Nov. 8, 1941 in Sacred Heart Church, she married the late Leo F. Lecker, who preceded her in death on July 2, 1968.

Quesenberry completes memorial for Vietnam veterans

Area Vietnam veterans now have their own memorial at Memorial Park in St. Marys.
Matthew Quesenberry Jr., a student at St. Marys Area High School and a member of Troop 199, completed his Eagle Scout project just in time for the Memorial Day holiday.
Quesenberry was given a few minutes to address the crowd during Monday morning's Memorial Day ceremony, and briefly recounted his inspiration for the project.

Maj. Kline says to remember, reflect and leave a legacy

KERSEY - At Monday morning's Fox Twp. Memorial Day celebration, Elk County native Major Ted Kline (USMC-Ret.) was the keynote speaker.
"When I was a fifth grader here in 1975, I never would have imagined back then that this memorial would be on this site and that I would be asked to speak here," Kline said, referring to the adjacent Fox Twp. Elementary School and the veterans' memorial in front of the Fox Twp. Community Center.
Kline noted the importance of Memorial Day in the nation's history and the part it plays in local history.

Elk County Catholic celebrates Class of 2012

ST. MARYS - Elk County Catholic High School honored the accomplishments of the Class of 2012 on Sunday afternoon during the school's 50th commencement exercises.
The 72 members of the senior class gathered Sunday morning for graduation activities, which began with a Baccalaureate Mass and a senior slideshow presentation in the school chapel and were followed by a brunch in the gymnasium.

Lt. Col. Weisner reflects on importance of remembrance

"Memorial Day is meant for remembrance, and remembrance not only of the men and women who gave their lives so that we might be free, but of their families, to whom we also owe the deepest debt of gratitude," said Lieutenant Colonel Randall S. Weisner, honorary grand marshal of the community's Memorial Day parade and guest speaker at the Memorial Day ceremony at Memorial Park on Monday morning.

Eckert new director of United Way

St. Marys Area United Way Executive Director Candace L. Eckert might be new to the job, but she has been raring to go from day one.
Eckert, who took the position in early April, has been spending time learning the ins and outs of the organization and has set a goal of making as many area residents aware of what the United Way does as possible.
"What I'm hoping to accomplish is to get the United Way out there again. I want to educate people on what the United Way is and what they offer to the community or give back to the community," Eckert said.

ERHC hosts luminary service 'honoring those who serve'

ST. MARYS - In honor of Memorial Day, a luminary service hosted by Elk Regional Health Center was held on Thursday night in recognition of individuals and organizations for their service to both community and country.
The evening began with a rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner" sung by Betty Schogren, Rene Smith, and the Rev. Craig Duffield.
In welcoming those in attendance, Gregory P. Bauer, president and CEO of Elk Regional Health System, discussed the importance of recognizing the sacrifice of America's servicemen and women.

Residents should keep recycling in mind during weekend celebrations

Events such as cookouts, family reunions, and graduation parties make Memorial Day weekend a time of revelry for many area residents.
While recycling is not likely at the forefront of most people's minds during this time, individuals still should be cognizant some of the materials that can be recycled following their holiday gatherings.
"Not only should people think about what they can recycle, they should also consider what they can re-use to reduce what goes into the trash at the end of the day," said Bekki Titchner, Elk County recycling and solid waste coordinator.

In preparation for their annual Olympic games, teachers at South St. Marys Street Elementary School spend the entire year planning lessons and activities centered around the country they represent during the games.
