Police canine aids officers in multiple fields

Throughout the past two years, City of St. Marys Police Patrolman Michael Shaffer and police canine Copper have enhanced their training by participating in specialized activities with fellow canine teams and their handlers.
In December a small group of canine handlers and trainers visited St. Marys during a break in their training in Olean, N.Y.

Freda M. Michuck, 100, of Horseshoe Drive, Penfield, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 at DRMC West after a lengthy illness.
She was born April 3, 1911 in Tyler, daughter of the late David and Agnes (Gustafson) Walker.
She married John Michuck, who preceded her in death on Aug. 8, 1980.
Born and raised in Tyler, she was a Penfield resident since 1941. She was a housewife and attended Penfield United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed volunteering her time, along with the Penfield Fireman's Auxiliary and many other local volunteer activities throughout the years.

Bertha M. Verbeck

Bertha M. Verbeck, 93, of 135 Swift St., Ridgway, died early Saturday morning, Jan. 14, 2012, at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born Jan. 21, 1918 in Medix Run, Benezette Township, daughter of the late Adiel and Mary (Lynch) Verbeck.

Lady Dutch edge Lady Crusaders 40-39

The last time the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch took on the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders at St. Marys Area High School, it was on Dec. 30, 2011 in the championship game of the 2011 Elk County Girls' Holiday Basketball Tournament, a game ECC won 41-35. According to St. Marys Area coach Leona Hoohuli, that game was not on her team's mind on Saturday evening as the two teams once again faced each other at the "Dutch Oven."

John A. Schwabenbauer

John A. Schwabenbauer, 93, a resident of Pinecrest Manor, St. Marys, and formerly of 615 Sherry Rd., St. Marys, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 31, 1918, in St. Marys, son of the late Walter H. and Gertrude C. Wickett.
On May 22, 1946, in the St. Boniface Church in Kersey, he married Adeline D. Mosier who preceded him in death on Oct. 13, 2010.

Victor C. "Wedow" Aiello, 90, of 301 Fairview Ave., Johnsonburg, died Thursday evening, Jan. 12, 2012, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 6, 1921 to Italian immigrants, the late Gennaro and Frances Chirillo Aiello.
He married Vittoria I. Bevacqua on Oct. 18, 1951 in Welland, Ontario, Canada, and she survives

As more and more time is spent gazing into the electric glow of a monitor or screen, more and more americans are experiencing a number of optical ailments associated with the use of technology.
Whether it be recreational or work-related, Americans are using computers, cellphones and an endless array of electronic gadgetry, including e-books, for longer, uninterrupted periods of time than ever before.

SMA swim teams open regular season with victories

BROOKVILLE - The St. Marys Area High School swim and dive team had a very successful first regular meet of the season when they traveled to Brookville on Thursday evening. Both squads won their meets, with the Lady Dutch outpacing the Lady Raiders 115-33, while the Dutchmen scored 114 to the Raiders’ 40.

Dutch wrestlers rally to defeat Corry Beavers 37-32

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad won six of the last eight bouts to come from behind to defeat the Corry Beavers by a 37-32 score Thursday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutch were trailing 25-3 when Ray Dent won by forfeit at 106 pounds. Dutchman Willie McGonnell won a major decision and Evan Smith won by forfeit. Dylan Smith picked up a pin at 126 to knot the score at 25-all. After Corry won a decision at 132 to go up 28-25, Dutchman Tyler Yetzer won by a pin and Sam Miller won by forfeit to make the score 37-28 with one match remaining.
