Dutchmen down Keystone 33-7 for first win of season

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team evened their record at 1-1 on the season with a 33-7 victory over the Keystone Panthers Friday on Elementary Night at Dutch Country Stadium.
The Dutch scored in every quarter last night with the exception of the fourth on their way to the victory.
“We did a much better job this week than we did last week,” said Dutch coach Joe Schlimm. “We played as a team this week and we came in with a good attitude. But we have a long way to go.”

ECC advances to title game with 2-0 win over St. Marys

Crusaders to meet Redbank Valley today at noon, Dutch play Ridgway at 10 a.m.

FOX TWP. – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the title game of the Elk County Boys' Soccer Tournament with a 2-0 win over St. Marys Area in a first-round game played Friday afternoon at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Fox Township.
Both keepers stayed on their toes throughout the first half, keeping the game scoreless. Elk was able to score a pair of goals in the second half to come away with the win.
"It was nice to see our team get going in the second half," said ECC coach Adam Bailey.

Order lifting drilling ban in forest is finalized

A federal judge has finalized his 2009 preliminary order to lift a ban on the drilling of oil and gas wells in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF).
U.S. District Court Judge Sean McLaughlin of Erie on Thursday “converted” his 2009 order into a “final declaratory judgment on the merits.”
In his 2009 order, McLaughlin said “enforcement of the forest-wide drilling ban in the ANF is hereby preliminary enjoined.”

Cancer study urges enrollment, aims to increase prevention

Area residents are encouraged to participate in the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3, a nationwide study being conducted in St. Marys on Sept. 11 and 12 at the Sacred Heart Parish Center on Center Street.

Frederic B. Oknefski, 87, of Montmorenci Rd., Ridgway, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at the Lutheran Home at Kane following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 3, 1925 in Ridgway, son of the late Benjamin C. and Minnie (Pearson) Oknefski.
On Dec. 6, 1947, he married Mary E. Hoffman, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of Ridgway and a 1943 graduate of the Ridgway High School.

Virginia "Budge" M. Werner Leopold

Virginia “Budge” M. Werner Leopold, 89, who greeted everyone with “Praise the Lord” and a hug, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at Florida Hospital Orlando, Orlando Fla., after a brief illness. She was born in St. Marys on May 1, 1923, a daughter of the late Arthur A. and Edith Mary Kaul Werner.

Police seize marijuana grow operation in Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG BORO - A Johnsonburg man is facing drug charges after authorities, in raiding his home, uncovered what is being called a "sophisticated and substantial" marijuana-growing operation at the residence.
According to affidavits, Troopers with the Pennsylvania State Police Troop C Vice Unit were notified of the existence of a marijuana-growing operation at the 433 Second Ave. home of Edward Joseph Pisani, 54, by a phone call from an unidentified source on Sept. 4.

SMASD appeal on warning status denied

ST. MARYS - During the workshop meeting of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors on Thursday, board members discussed the district filing an appeal with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) following receipt of a warning status due to the graduation rate for economically disadvantaged students. The previous appeal was denied.

Elk Catholic volleyball squad downs St. Marys Area 3-0

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team evened their record at 1-1 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch Thursday night at the SMAHS “Dutch Oven”. The Lady Dutch are now 0-2 on the year.
The Lady Crusaders won the first set by a 25-14 score. They took the second set 25-23 and won the third set 25-20 to win the match.
