Ridgway School District names new superintendent

RIDGWAY – At Tuesday's school board meeting, the Ridgway Area School District announced the decision to hire Robert Rocco as its new superintendent, as well as the approval of a contract between the district and the teachers association.
Rocco will replace Dr. Lester Shull as superintendent of the Ridgway Area School District. Shull served as the superintendent for seven days, after he was selected to fill the position in an Aug. 5 workshop session for the school board.

Esther Kathryn Sicheri

Esther Kathryn Sicheri, 93, of Twinridge Lane, Richmond, Va., formerly of Kersey, died Aug. 6, 2014.
She was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Kersey, the daughter of the late John and Teresa Lavella Astori. On Aug. 2, 1947, she married Gustav Sicheri who preceded her in death in 2003.

St. Marys Area School District Superintendent Dr. Brian Toth, shown on right, and Josh Williams, assistant superintendent, shown on left, were sworn in recently by Elk County President Judge Richard Masson at the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway. Toth was recently appointed to the position following the retirement of former superintendent Ann Kearney. Williams was promoted to assistant superintendent from his former position as St. Marys Area High School principal.

Class size debated by parents, school board

A large crowd of parents were on hand at Monday's St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors meeting to voice their concern about the large class size of Fox Township Elementary School's first grade.
Citing student safety and quality of education, several mothers expressed discontent the district has not split the 30-member class into two separate classrooms.
"If enrollment stays the same there is a very good likelihood we will be hiring a second first grade teacher," Board President Bob Luchini said following the meeting.

St. Marys woman headbutts patrol car

BENEZETTE TWP. – A St. Marys woman is charged in damaging a State Police patrol car with her head against it while police were questioning her.
Matraca Rae Polinick, 23, of 606 Lenze Ave., faces misdemeanor charges of institutional vandalism, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, as well as a summary charge of public drunkenness and similar misconduct.

Judith Helen Sparks, 73, formerly of St. Marys, died Aug. 5, 2014 in Casa Grande, Ariz.
She was born June 19, 1941 in St. Marys, daughter of Daniel and Sophia (Gapinski) Lenze.
Judy earned her master's degree from OSU. She worked for 38 years as a teacher, principal and specialized tutor in several Catholic schools. She retired from Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Grove City, Ohio.

Access Road streetlights lighting up soon

The streetlights on Access Road, located in the Elk County Industrial Park, will be upgraded as they have been turned off since November 2013. Members of St. Marys City Council approved a motion to turn on the electric service to the lights at a cost of $75/month totaling $900/year. All the lights are in good working condition.
Councilmen Ned Jacob was the only member who cast an opposing vote.

'Frozen' mural a summer hit

Last week staff members at Memorial Park put the finishing touches on their latest mural. Located on the wall surrounding the entrance to the park office, the new artwork features characters from the 2013 hit Disney movie "Frozen," including characters Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven the reindeer, and Olaf the snowman.
While a number of staff members assisted with the project, two of the main individuals who saw it through from start to finish were Taylor Bellina and Laura Buchheit.
