St. Marys Library launches eBook program

Free electronic and audiobooks are now available to members of the St. Marys Public Library with the recent launch of its e-Book lending system.
Scarlette Corbin, library director, said the library has joined with other Seneca District libraries , including those located in Johnsonburg, Ridgway, Wilcox, Marionville, Tionesta, Bradford, Kane, Port Allegheny and Smethport, in splitting the cost of the $12,000 program, which was determined based on each library's population. With the group rate, St. Marys' cost was significantly decreased to $1,400 to participate in the program.

Options for stroke victims returning home

ST. MARYS - Following a stroke, a patient and family members are often faced with a number of challenges that accompany the decision to bring their loved one home. But a recent seminar held at The Education Center at Elk Regional Health Center that focused on prevention and treatment also touched on the home health care options available to a patient and family in returning home.

Lady Dutch advance to D9 AAA final with 3-2 win over Clearfield

Headed into the top of the seventh inning of the D9 AAA girls' softball semifinal contest at the St. Marys Area High School softball field on Wednesday afternoon, the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch had kept the Clearfield Lady Bisons scoreless and looked set to record a 3-0 victory. Clearfield did not give up so easily, though, as Rachel Hoffman walked and B.J. Bowman connected with one of Lady Dutch pitcher Rachel Ginther's throws to record the only home run of the contest and pull Clearfield within one run of tying the game. St.

St. Marys Area High School honors spring sports athletes

The St. Marys Area High School held its Spring Sports Awards Program Tuesday evening in Carpin Auditorium to recognize those student-athletes who participated in baseball, softball, boys’ tennis and boys’ and girls’ track and field.
Student Activities Director Terry Straub acted as master of ceremonies and welcomed everyone to the affair. He noted that the program would follow the order of letter and certificate presentations, presentation of MVP awards and presentation of special awards.

Constance Wortman Cashdollar

Constance Wortman Cashdollar, 66, of Albion, died on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 following a lengthy illness.
She was born Feb. 6, 1946 in St. Marys, the daughter of Joseph C. and the late Meda F. Wortman. In October 1989, she married Rick Cashdollar, who survives.

Adelaide M. Gallagher

Adelaide M. Gallagher, 95, of Naples, Fla., died on May 21, 2012. 
Mrs. Gallagher was born in Pittsburgh, but was a permanent resident of Naples since 1957. She had worked as a real estate broker.  In 1974, she married the late John Thomas Gallagher, with whom she enjoyed 18 wonderful years of marriage before he died in 1992.  Mrs. Gallagher was a member of St. William's Catholic Church.

Constance M. "Connie" Beaver

Constance M. "Connie" Beaver, 73, of 113 Grove St., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday evening, May 22, 2012, at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys following a brief illness.
She was born on Sept. 2, 1938 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Costek and Mildred Seifert Olszewski. On July 4, 1959, she married David C. Beaver, who survives.

Commission eyes spending plans

RIDGWAY - Members of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] are keeping a sharp eye on federal and state spending plans as lawmakers continue to make budget adjustments.
"Not much has changed when we're looking at the federal budget updates," said Eric Bridges, the commission's executive director. "We're pretty much where we were a week ago when conversations started. Appropriation bills on the federal side are moving through each respective chamber."

New venue for SSMSE Olympics proves positive

The fourth-seeded Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball squad advanced to the next round of the D9 playoffs with a 5-3 victory over the thirteenth-seeded Venango Catholic Vikings on Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park in a game that was briefly delayed twice, once due to rain and then again due to thunder.
