Current OSHA initiatives outlined

RIDGWAY - At the most recent meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force, Compliance Assistance Specialist Mark F. Harmon of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Erie office gave a presentation on the organization’s role and recent activities.
"We regulate workplace safety," said Harmon of OSHA's chief role.

Lars Oskar Troberg, 89, of 645 Sherry Rd., St. Marys, died on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012 at his residence.
He was born Nov. 16, 1922 on the Aland Island in Sweden, son of the late Karl and Augusta Johanna Helin Troberg.
On Jan. 14, 1953, in Helsinki, Finland, he married Beverly JoAnn Hoffman from Delmar, Dela., who survives.

OSHA jurisdiction explained

RIDGWAY - Compliance Assistance Specialist Mark F. Harmon of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Erie office recently explained the organization's jurisdiction and procedures to members of the Elk County Gas Task Force.
"OSHA is an agency within the Department of Labor. We have the responsibility, we cover workplace safety. The first thing that we would have to establish is that we have a company and we have an employee working for that company. We’re concerned about the employee’s safety," Harmon said.

Legislative issues discussed during Farm Bureau tour

During Friday's Elk County Farm Bureau tour, numerous legislative issues were discussed ranging from state to national matters.
State Representative Matt Gabler (R-Elk/Clearfield) emphasized the importance of organizations like the Farm Bureau, which provides subject matter experts in each industry, in order to keep legislators informed of different developments taking place.

Jay Twp. approves CENTAX replacement

In the wake of the Elk County Tax Collection Commission voting to appoint a replacement for the county's earned income tax (EIT) collector CENTAX, the county's municipalities must now decide whether to also appoint the firm chosen by the committee to take over the local services tax (LST) collections also performed by CENTAX prior to its termination.

Caterpillar to blame for ugly webs in trees

Many Ridgway residents have been taking notice and voicing their concerns over unsightly, light gray, silken webs in many of the trees within the borough.
The fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea [Drury], got off to an early start building its impressive silk tents on the ends of limbs and sometimes enclosing entire branches.
Ridgway Borough Manager Martin Schuller says despite the recent surge, residents need not be concerned for the health of the trees.

Home search yields more in Milliard case

On Aug. 9, law enforcement officers executing a search warrant descended on the 76 Long Level home belonging to Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, of Ridgway, combing the property for physical evidence that would bolster ongoing investigations and possibly lead to new cases against Milliard, who is currently incarcerated and charged with two area arsons as well as attempted homicide.
Milliard is charged along with his son, Anthony Karl Milliard, 28, of Ridgway, in arsons committed at 115 First Ave. in Johnsonburg on Dec. 4, 2008 and one at 521 West Main St. in Ridgway on May 30, 2012.

Crusader Marching Band members 'have a dream'

The Elk County Catholic High School Crusader Marching Band has a crowd-pleasing new score for this year's halftime show and performance season.
The group will be performing "The Best of ABBA," a medley of top hits from the Swedish band known worldwide to audiences of all ages. The songs they will perform are "Dancing Queen," "I Have A Dream," "Mamma Mia," and "The Winner Takes it All."
Ray Knight, ECCH's longtime marching band director, says this year's material seems to have students especially enthusiastic.

Wood processing industry on display at Farm Bureau tour

DeLullo Trucking Corp. and The Woodbed Corp. of St. Marys hosted the 2012 Elk County Farm Bureau Legislative Farm Tour on Friday, showcasing the wood processing aspect of the timber industry.

Jay Twp. officials seek leverage in Shale activity

The Jay Township Board of Supervisors, in an effort to exert control over Marcellus Shale activity occurring within the municipality, have found themselves bound in their attempts by bureaucratic red tape.
Concerns have been mounting in Jay Twp. regarding the limiting of local governing of Shale activity, and township officials have repeatedly sought ways to maintain any shred of influence over industry operations within their jurisdiction.
