Fiorina Aiello

March 14, 2012

Fiorina Aiello, age 78, of 221 Mill St., Johnsonburg, died Wednesday afternoon, March 14, 2012, at the Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College following a lengthy illness.
She was born April 29, 1933 in Reggio Calabria, Cannolo, Italy, daughter of the late Antonio and Maria Staltare Siciliano. On Oct. 11, 1958, in Welland, Ontario, Canada, she married Carmen Aiello; he preceded her in death Nov. 20, 2004.

'Minute to Win It' challenge benefits Relay for Life

ST. MARYS - Area youth can have a blast while helping to raise money to support cancer research and programs at the 2nd annual "Minute to Win It" challenge this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the CMF Club in St. Marys.
The event is sponsored by Elk County Relay for Life's Team F.R.I.E.N.D.S., and all proceeds benefit the 2012 Relay, which will be held at Fox Township Community Park this summer.

SMASD adopts resolution supporting further charter school reform

A resolution in support of "substantial charter school funding and accountability reform" was adopted by the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors at Monday's meeting, making official the board's position in calling for charter reform legislation "that relieves the financial burden on school districts created by charter schools."

Council members comment on issues

At a recent St. Marys City Council meeting, Councilman Greg Gebauer inquired if there has been any further discussion on the St. Marys Area Water Authority's rate increase on fire hydrants.
Currently the city pays $165 per hydrant for 315 hydrants. This rate is set to increase to $202.50 next year.
The authority planned to add three new hydrants next year. If the authority approves the increase, this will provide a revenue increase of $11,647.

Bunny Hop, model search to raise funds for Brain Aneurysm Foundation

Several area residents have once again teamed up to raise money for The Brain Aneurysm Foundation. Not only is the second annual Bunny Hop 5K scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 7 at Benzinger Park in St. Marys, but Carly Frank is also competing in the Maurices Main Street Model Search. Any proceeds raised will benefit The Brain Aneurysm Foundation.

Margaret M. "Rita" Repko

Margaret M. "Rita" Repko, 89, of the Lutheran Home at Kane, formerly of 902 Burning Well Rd., Wilcox, died early Tuesday morning on March 13, 2012 at the Lutheran Home at Kane following a lengthy illness.
She was born on Dec. 29, 1922 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Frank and Maria Lopreiti Serianni Colosimo.
On May 15, 1950 in the Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, she married Frank W. Repko Sr. He died on Aug. 16, 2007.
Mrs. Repko resided in Kane for the past year. She was formerly of Wilcox.

SMASD rejects co-op proposal

Monday's regular meeting of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors saw the board revisit the subject of a resolution to include Ridgway Area School District (RASD) in an athletic co-operative between St. Marys High School and Elk County Catholic for the sports of swimming and diving.

Footlighters presenting 'You Can't Take it With You' this weekend

The Elk County Footlighters will return to the stage this weekend with a dinner theatre production of “You Can’t Take it With You.”
The group will be performing at Aiello’s Café on North Broad Street in Ridgway on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 15 through March 17. A buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the performance begins at 7:30 p.m.
Footlighter member and play director Mike Ames said the comedic antics in the play will appeal to a broad audience.

Offer support to tornado victims nearly a year later

Gannon University students Bryton Dybowski of Ridgway, Shelby Davison of Ridgway and Don Breakey of Johnsonburg recently traveled to Joplin, Mo., to assist victims of the May 2011 tornado. The trip was a part of an alternative spring break program offering students something to do with their time off.
“A lot of kids go home and relax,” said Breakey, a biology and pre-med major at Gannon. “I wanted to do something productive and give myself a new perspective on what is out there and what can be done.”
Dybowski went because of her love of service work.

Police intern policy approved

A new policy entitled the Internship Ride-Along Program through the City of St. Marys Police Department was approved during the most recent St. Marys City Council meeting.
Chief Todd Caltagarone explained the policy before council, stating that while the program has been in place for several years, he believed there needs to be a formal policy in place to protect the police, the observer and the general public.
