Pittsburg, Shawmut, & Northern Railroad got its start in St. Marys

According to local historian Ray Beimel, the Pittsburg, Shawmut, and Northern Railroad "in a sense started in St. Marys."
Beimel recently discussed the railroad's history during a presentation at the St. Marys Senior Center, explaining that the railroad was used to transport coal from mines in Elk County to communities in upstate New York.
"Kaul and Hall built a railroad that ran from St. Marys to a place called Hyde, which is outside of Brockway, and the whole point of that was to haul coal from the mines at Brandy Camp and that area and bring it up to St. Marys," Beimel said.

Butterfly release for hospice coming up

A poignant ceremony that offers area residents the opportunity to honor someone special will again be held by Community Nurses, Inc.
The Community Nurses Butterfly Release for Hospice will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5 at The Serenity Garden, behind the organization's building on the campus of Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys. The general public is invited to the release, which allows area residents to honor their loved ones and benefits the Community Nurses' Hospice program.

Gennocro reflects on winning state championship

On May 26 at Shippensburg University's Seth Grove Stadium, St. Marys Area High School's Adair Gennocro joined the ranks of the PIAA state champions as she claimed her first career title in the PIAA Class-AA girls' 3200-meter run.
Gennocro, who will begin her senior year at SMAHS in the fall, recently reflected upon the race and what it is like being a state champion. She is the first SMAHS athlete to win a state championship in track and field. Her photo will eventually hang in the foyer of the school along with that of Jeff Foster, who won a state championship in cross country in 1973.

Shawn M. “Buck” McCabe, 41, of Johnsonburg, and recently of Rock Hill, S.C., died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 22, 2012.
He was born Dec. 5, 1970 in Ridgway, son of Robert and Patricia (Klink) McCabe of Johnsonburg.

Wilcox meets Millcreek tonight in winner’s bracket finale

St. Marys plays Albion today at 4 p.m.

The Wilcox Legion remained undefeated in the Pa. American Legion Baseball Region 8 Tournament being played at Berwind Park through Wednesday of this week.
Wilcox defeated Albion by an 8-3 score Sunday afternoon to advance to tonight’s winner’s bracket finale where they will meet Millcreek, who defeated St. Marys by a 14-4 score in seven innings.
Today’s schedule will see Meadville and Albion meet at 1 p.m. in an elimination game, while St. Marys will meet French Creek Valley at 4 p.m. in an elimination game.

Naomi Ruth Wolfe

Naomi Ruth Wolfe, 81, formerly of Rattlesnake Road, Brockport, died Friday, July 20, 2012 at Centre Crest Nursing Home in Bellefonte.
She was born June 27, 1931 in Curwensville, daughter of the late Rev. James and Ida Brown Heise. She married Robert McNutt on July 22, 1961; he preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 1987. She then married Dennis Wolfe on Oct. 29, 1994; he preceded her in death on April 1, 2012.
Naomi attended the Lanes Mills United Methodist Church. She had been employed at Brockway Glass as a fork lift operator.

Legion baseball to switch to wooden bats in 2013

ST. MARYS - With Pennsylvania American Legion baseball teams set to switch to using wooden bats starting next year, Region 8 Director Denny Haberberger decided to take advantage of the Region 8 Tournament's close proximity to Brookville and invite sales representatives from BWP Bats, LLC to Berwind Park on Sunday to show off some of their bats and answer questions from teams from throughout the region. BWP Bats is located in Brookville, off of Exit 86 along Interstate 80.
Haberberger indicated that he plans to encourage teams to use the company as a supplier next season.

Berteri addresses CENTAX concerns in Jay Twp.

Elk County Tax Collection Committee (ETCC) member Dave Berteri addressed attendees at Thursday's meeting of the Jay Township Board of Supervisors regarding the calamitous contractual default of CENTAX, the firm employed by the county to collect and distribute earned income tax (EIT) monies following the passage of the state's Act 32, as well as the steps to be taken in moving forward.
