Dutch gymnasts place third at Central PA League Championship Meet

DuBOIS – The St. Marys Area High School gymnastics team placed third at the Central PA League Championship Meet at the DuBois Area High School on Saturday with a score of 119.6. St. Marys was able to snag six top spots in the competition.
Altoona finished in first place with a score of 133.425, followed by Bellefonte 126, St. Marys 119.6, DuBois 115.7, and Ridgway 105.625.
"Although the girls somewhat struggled through the meet, they still performed well and I was happy with the outcome of the meet," said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless.

New teacher contract approved at SMASD meeting

At the St. Marys Area School District's Board of Directors meeting Monday, the board voted to approve a new teacher contract. Superintendent Anne Kearney said the contract being presented was the result of extensive negotiations between the St. Marys Area School Board and St. Marys Education Association as represented in the matter by association president Julie Bish.
According to Kearney, the two sides reached an agreement after "many meetings discussing the current economic state of Pennsylvania and the community."

Fox Twp. issues annual fire report

During the recent Fox Township Supervisors meeting, Scott Surra, chief of Fox Township Volunteer Fire Department, presented a report on the department.
According to Surra, the department was dispatched 83 times in 2011.
"This is substantially below our 10-year average," Surra said. "The wet spring and fall months kept our brush and grass fire responses to only one."
There were a total of 78 full alarms and five silent alarms, which only required a department officer(s) to respond.

ECCSS looking to 'be. unique'

"Be. yourself, Be.inspired, Be.eccss" is just one spin on the Elk County Catholic School System's recently launched marketing campaign.
"We want to really promote that we are regional and that we are the Diocesan school system. So when those parishes are thinking about Catholic education, they are thinking about us," said Mary Meyer, ECCSS director of development.
Within the upcoming days and months, residents may begin noticing an array of billboards, banners in school parking lots, newspaper ads and radio and television commercials promoting the school system.

Elizabeth A. Kosmiski

Elizabeth A. Kosmiski, 84, of the Lutheran Home at Kane, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at her residence.
She was born April 30, 1927, in Ridgway, the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Kline Brehm. She married Richard A. Kosmiski, who predeceased her on Oct. 6, 1970.
Mrs. Kosmiski was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, Catholic Daughters of America and the Idlers Club. She had been employed at the Hour Glass Dry Cleaners in Ridgway.
She is survived by a daughter, Pamela Gregori (Leo) of St. Marys; 12 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Jay-Don Joseph Hall

Jay-Don Joseph Hall, 78, of 58 Diamond Lodge Way, Emporium, died Saturday evening, Feb. 11, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 27, 1934, in Barnes, Warren County, son of the late Charles J. and Alice M. (MacMartin) Hall. He had resided in Emporium for the last few months but had been a former resident of Truman, Austin, Ridgway and Kersey.

James Vincent "GG" Christoff

James Vincent "GG" Christoff, 89, a resident of Fairview Manor in Erie and formerly of 520 Brusselles St., St. Marys, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012 at UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie.
He was born Jan. 5, 1923 in Ridgway, son of the late Chester and Lena Piccirillo Christoff. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Leo's High School, Class of 1941. He was also a graduate of the DuBois Business College.
On June 5, 1947, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Dorothy Vollmer, who survives.

Lady Crusaders down Lady Dutch 47-38 in D9 League play

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch squad a 47-38 District 9 League setback Saturday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders outscored the Lady Dutch 12-7 in the first eight minutes of play and 12-7 in the second quarter to open a 24-14 halftime lead. They led by 11 at the end of three quarters, 33-22. The fourth quarter saw the Lady Dutch outscore ECC 16-14, making the final score 47-38.
“I thought we played really hard tonight. We’ve been playing good basketball of late and it continued tonight,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.

Business Expo to showcase array of vendors

With over 40 vendors slated to attend the 2012 Business Expo, organizers are encouraging the public to stop out at the event taking place Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Red Fern in St. Marys from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be representatives of businesses including contractors, energy representatives, educational, home-based businesses, manufacturing, insurance and healthcare, along with many more.
Together, The River 98.9 radio station and the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce have paired up to sponsor the event as in years past.

Block grants and Corbett's budget discussed at SMASD workshop meeting

St. Marys Area School District Superintendent Anne Kearney discussed the 2012-2013 state budget released by Pa. Governor Tom Corbett this past week at Thursday's meeting of the SMASD Board of Directors. Kearney identified changes and non-changes to public education funding as represented in the budget and how it all relates to public school districts and SMASD in particular.
According to the Pennsylvania School Board Association (PSBA), this marks the second consecutive year that public schools in Pennsylvania have been faced with cuts in state funding.
