Gebauer questions city complaint form process

During the recent St. Marys City Council meeting, Councilman Greg Gebauer inquired about the complaint form process within the city and the process involved when investigating residents' claims.
After studying a complaint report provided by all members of council, Gebauer inquired about a March 2011 incident involving a resident's flooded basement caused by a plugged catch basin.
"To me I would think that would be some type of priority. Was that ever looked into or is it being taken care of?" Gebauer asked.

Conservation District approves road projects

The Elk County Conservation District [ECCD] approved three dirt and gravel road projects during Monday night's regular meeting.
Three applications were submitted for projects in Jones and Fox Townships.
According to ECCD Chairman Russ Braun, a meeting with the Quality Assurance Board was held prior to the regular meeting to rank the projects.
"As far as the rankings are concerned, the two Jones Township projects came in on top and the Fox Township project came in third," Braun said. "They are all good projects and there is enough money to cover all three and all three were approved."

Mary T. Stubber, 88, formerly of 180 Queens Rd., St. Marys, died on Monday, Jan. 23, 2012 at the Sara A. Todd Nursing Home in Carlisle after living with Alzheimer's for many years.
She was born September 15, 1923 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Michael and Helena Biszak Ausserer.
On November 27, 1948 in St. Marys Church, she married the late John J. Stubber, Sr., who preceded her in death on October 20, 1988.

Rendezvous reaches No. 13

Organizers are preparing for what will be the 13th installment of the Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous scheduled for Feb. 18-25 in downtown Ridgway.
"We're excited because it's coming fast and we're excited about the new location," said Zoe Boni, daughter of Rendezvous founders Rick and Liz Boni.

Carver takes charge of gallery at ECCOTA

St. Marys native Kelly Carver recently left the West Coast and is back on the East Coast serving as the new gallery coordinator at Elk County Council on the Arts (ECCOTA).
Carver returned to the area from Seattle, Wash. in February 2010 and began an association with ECCOTA that led to her current position.
"I moved back home in February of 2010, and then in June of 2010, I became a volunteer and then I sat on the board of directors of ECCOTA. So I sat on the board until August of 2011 and then the job of gallery coordinator became available and they offered me the position," Carver said.

Area Boy Scouts' fitness initiative under way

The Bucktail Council's "Scout Buddy" Get Fit Initiative began this past Wednesday with an official weigh-in held at the Council Service Center in DuBois.
The official weigh-in saw 66 scouts and parents, or 33 teams of two turn up with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts ranging in age from six to 18 years old.

Joyce Ann Samick White, 73, of King & Queen Court House, died on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012. 
Joyce was the youngest of five children of the late Leo and Agnes Samick of St. Marys. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Ralph White; two daughters, Marjorie White and her husband Matthew Koenig of Aydlett, N.C., and Susan Wass and her husband Barry of Gloucester, Va.; two grandchildren, Aaron and Karsyn Wass; a sister, Delores Frey and her husband Joe of St. Marys, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. 

Vincent F. “Jim” Varisano

Vincent F. “Jim” Varisano, 85, of 621 Dawson Street, Kane, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2012 at his residence.
Born Dec. 16, 1926, in Kane, he was a son of the late Peter and Angeline Ferraro Varisano.
Jim, a graduate of Kane High School Class of 1944, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, with service in Japan. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Kane, retiring in 1986 after 31 years of service. 

Lucille M. Silcosky

Lucille M. Silcosky, 87, of Silver Creek Terrace in St. Marys and formerly of 163 W. Center St., Johnsonburg, died on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a brief illness.
She was born on Nov. 15, 1924, in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Walter J. and Grace Meise Winters.
She married William "Bill" Silcosky on Jan. 6, 1951 in St. John's Lutheran Church in Johnsonburg. He died on Nov. 17, 1998.

Masson to render verdict in Kralik hearing in 30 days

RIDGWAY - The second part of a Post-Conviction Relief Act (PCRA) hearing, filed by Edward R. Kralik, 68, of St. Marys, took place Friday afternoon at the Elk County Courthouse. The first portion of the hearing took place December 8, 2011.
Kralik plead guilty in May to third-degree murder in the June 2010 homicide of Clayton Lecker of St. Marys and is currently incarcerated at State Correction Institution (SCI) Smithfield in Huntingdon.
