Fifty years ago today, on Monday, Sept. 10, 1962, Elk County Christian High School officially opened its doors to students for the first time, replacing Central Catholic High School.
The newly constructed high school was under the direction of Headmaster Rev. Daniel J. Martin and boasted an enrollment of 725 students and a faculty of 40 teachers.
The Bucktail Archers Association is currently gearing up for its second biannual, and third overall, benefit event to raise funds for the Hunt of a Lifetime Foundation, Inc. The group, in conjunction with the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club and Bowfishing Association of America, will be holding a variety of activities at the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club, located at 1339 Glen Hazel Rd. in St. Marys, on Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23.
ST. MARYS - With the Keystone Exams, a new statewide assessment, to be implemented in Pennsylvania schools this year, concerns surrounding the rigors of testing facing its student body and the logistics of prepping student performance on the exams, an eventual requirement for graduation, were discussed by the St. Marys Area School District's board of directors at Thursday's workshop meeting.
MT. ZION - At last weekâ€™s monument dedication for the Elk County Rifles, Company G of the Pennsylvania Bucktails, James Burke of the Mt. Zion Historical Society gave the opening remarks and discussed the formation of the famous Civil War unit and how the group got its name during a ceremony held at Mt. Zion Historical Park.
ST. MARYS â€“ An antique and classic car show held Saturday, Sept. 15 will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The Third Annual Antique Class Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Tractor Supply parking lot located along the Million Dollar Highway in St. Marys.
"This is a new adventure for us," said event co-coordinator Leah Leuschel. "The car show is three years in the making. Our first year was amazing, we had 30 to 40 cars there and we are hoping to double that this year."
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team evened their record at 1-1 on the season with a 33-7 victory over the Keystone Panthers Friday on Elementary Night at Dutch Country Stadium.
The Dutch scored in every quarter last night with the exception of the fourth on their way to the victory.
â€śWe did a much better job this week than we did last week,â€ť said Dutch coach Joe Schlimm. â€śWe played as a team this week and we came in with a good attitude. But we have a long way to go.â€ť
Crusaders to meet Redbank Valley today at noon, Dutch play Ridgway at 10 a.m.
FOX TWP. â€“Â The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the title game of the Elk County Boys' Soccer Tournament with a 2-0 win over St. Marys Area in a first-round game played Friday afternoon at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Fox Township.
Both keepers stayed on their toes throughout the first half, keeping the game scoreless. Elk was able to score a pair of goals in the second half to come away with the win.
"It was nice to see our team get going in the second half," said ECC coach Adam Bailey.
A federal judge has finalized his 2009 preliminary order to lift a ban on the drilling of oil and gas wells in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF).
U.S. District Court Judge Sean McLaughlin of Erie on Thursday â€śconvertedâ€ť his 2009 order into a â€śfinal declaratory judgment on the merits.â€ť
In his 2009 order, McLaughlin said â€śenforcement of the forest-wide drilling ban in the ANF is hereby preliminary enjoined.â€ť
Area residents are encouraged to participate in the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3, a nationwide study being conducted in St. Marys on Sept. 11 and 12 at the Sacred Heart Parish Center on Center Street.
Frederic B. Oknefski, 87, of Montmorenci Rd., Ridgway, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at the Lutheran Home at Kane following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 3, 1925 in Ridgway, son of the late Benjamin C. and Minnie (Pearson) Oknefski.
On Dec. 6, 1947, he married Mary E. Hoffman, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of Ridgway and a 1943 graduate of the Ridgway High School.
