James P. Raybuck

June 11, 2012

James P. Raybuck, 82, of 428 Smith St., Ridgway, died Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born Jan. 21, 1930, in Ridgway, the son of Clair and Elbirta Penfield Raybuck.
On Nov. 29, 1958, in Brookville, he married Lena Dunn, who survives.
Mr. Raybuck had resided most of his life in Ridgway. He was Methodist by faith. He was a member of the American Legion and the Ridgway Elks. He had been employed as a train conductor with the Pennsy Railroad.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Patricia A. Rees Covel

Patricia A. Rees Covel, 80, of Pinecrest Manor, died Saturday, June 9, 2012, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
She was born Aug. 5, 1931 in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Paul and Cecilia Scherer Rees.
On Aug. 6, 1960, she married Harry N. Covel; he survives.
Mrs. Covel was a lifelong Ridgway resident. She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church and the Good Samaritan Society. She was a graduate of St. Leo’s School. She had been employed at United Natural Gas until 1960.

Sarah Martin Kronenwetter

Sarah Martin Kronenwetter, 76, of California, Md., died surrounded by her loving family on June 5, 2012 in Washington, D.C.
Born on August 23, 1935 in Ridgway, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Dorothy Martin.
She was the loving wife of Ted Kronenwetter, whom she married on Aug. 20, 1960 in St. Marys.
Sarah graduated from St. Marys Area High School in 1953 and moved from St. Marys to St. Mary’s County, Md., in November 2008. She worked as a teacher’s aide for 20 years, retiring in 1997.
Sarah loved her family especially her grandchildren.

Joseph William Cole

Joseph William Cole, 87, Walnut St, DuBois, died at his residence at 10:40 a.m. on June 10, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.
Born Nov. 1, 1924 to Joseph H. Cole and Josephine Willis Cole in Crafton, Pa., he was preceded in death by his three siblings, Samuel H. Cole, Annah M. Doak, and Howard C. Cole. He is survived by his wife, Janet Shenck Cole

Supervisors contemplate use of soccer fields

The Fox Township Supervisors approved numerous requests for use of township recreational facilities for such events as birthday and graduation parties, a family reunion and a fun walk and picnic at their recent meeting.
Among those was a request from the Elk County Catholic High School boys' soccer team to utilize the park's Angela Huey soccer field, as well as the SinterFire soccer fields, for the team's 2012 season.

In addition to tracking spending habits to make adjustments where needed and putting whatever amount of money you’re able to afford into savings before paying other bills, Kuleck said there are some other methods of saving that can allow people to save without too much pain.

Beimel highlights history of Erie Avenue area

Throughout St. Marys' history, Erie Avenue has been patronized by local residents for a variety of reasons. Stores, hotels, and other businesses have all come and gone, but the area has remained an integral part of the community.

Lawrence T. “Larry” McGeehan

Lawrence T. “Larry” McGeehan, 60, of Lewis Run, and formerly of Brownsville, died on Friday, June 8, 2012 at his home. 
He was born on Aug. 7, 1951 in Bethlehem, a son of the late John and Elizabeth Durnin McGeehan.
He was a graduate of the St. Marys High School. He received his undergraduate degree and his master’s degree from John Carroll University, University Heights, Ohio and he received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed spending time outdoors; he also loved to spend time in the kitchen and cook.

Robert W. McBurney

Robert W. McBurney (aka “Radar” and “Jingles”), 65, of St. Marys died Thursday, May 24, 2012 at the DuBois Nursing Home in DuBois, where he resided for the past two years.
He was born March 8, 1947 in St. Marys, a son of Madeline (Smith) McBurney Huff, who survives, and the late Robert L. McBurney.
He was a 1965 graduate of Johnsonburg Area High School. He attended DeVry University in Chicago, Ill., studying electronics.

ECCF scholarships awarded to area students

ST. MARYS – A number of area students headed off to college or other postsecondary education will have some help thanks to scholarships awarded through the Elk County Community Foundation (ECCF).
Students from Elk County and the surrounding area were awarded 87 scholarships totaling over $100,600 through the foundation, which helps individuals and groups achieve their philanthropic goals by assisting with the creation of endowments and other funding, and then awarding that funding locally to individuals, nonprofit organizations and others.
