Crusaders down Ridgway, 9-0

The Elk County Catholic boys soccer team took control early and were dominant in a 9-0 victory over Ridgway Thursday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
The game was delayed for a hour because only one referee showed up for the game and the delay was done until a second referee could get to the site. The game started at 5 p.m. and a full 40-minute first half was played but there was only a 3-minute halftime and a 30-minute second half before the game was called due to darkness.

Johnsonburg edges ECC to win Elk County Golf Tournament

The Johnsonburg Rams golfers edged the team from Elk County Catholic High School 232-233 to win this year's Elk County Golf Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course. The Ridgway Elkers came in third with a score of 244 and St. Marys Area was fourth with 250.
Six members of each school participated in the tournament, except for Johnsonburg, which had only five players. The tournament consisted of six holes of scramble, six holes of alternating shots and six holes of best ball.

Crusader golfers pick up wins over SMA, Brockway

The Elk County Catholic HIgh School golf squad picked up a pair of victories over St. Marys Area and Brockway during a windy, rainy and cold match played Wednesday afternoon at the St. Marys Golf Club.
ECC had a team score of 214 while St. Marys had 246 and Brockway had 246.
The medalist for the day was ECC's Brandon Schlimm with a five-over-par round of 40.
The low scorer for St. Marys Area was Rudy Gleixner with a 46. Brockway's Alec Bouch shot a 45.

Expert witnesses testify in Donachy murder case

RIDGWAY - Two expert witnesses from the Pennsylvania State Police crime labs testified on Wednesday during Lawrence Earl Donachy’s trial being held in the Elk County Courthouse. Donachy, 36, is charged in the April 6, 1999 rape and murder of Irene Challingsworth, a St. Marys beautician.
Forensic Lab Manager Bruce Tackett of the PSP Crime Lab in Erie, along with Forensic DNA Manager Beth Ann Marne of PSP Crime Lab in Greensburg, were both accepted as expert witnesses as part of the trial.

Former boyfriend of victim takes stand in Donachy murder trial

RIDGWAY - Inside the Elk County Courthouse on day three of the homicide trial of a man accused of the April 6, 1999 rape and murder of St. Marys beautician Irene Challingsworth, jurors listened to testimony from Pennsylvania State Police scientists and Challingsworth's former boyfriend. Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, is charged with one count each of homicide, rape, burglary, aggravated assault, criminal attempt at arson and unlawful restraint.

County-wide 'Pink Day' set for Friday

Forget about going green: Elk County is going pink. This Friday will mark the third annual county-wide Pink Day to support breast cancer awareness.
The annual event began in 2008 and has grown each year to involve all of the schools within the county.
"It would be wonderful for the tradition to become community-wide throughout Elk County on one designated day each October," said Roben Daghir, elementary guidance counselor for the Ridgway Area School District. "We tell our younger students that if a plane were flying overhead on Pink Day, there would be a sea of pink over Elk County."

Rotary prepares for first quilt show

The Ridgway Rotary will be hosting its first annual Quilt Show fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Udarbe Complex along South Street in Ridgway.
The Quilt Show is free and open to the public, and coincides with the Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce Flavors of Fall festival. During the festival residents are encouraged to stop in at the Quilt Show, which features over 75 quilts created by residents throughout the county.

ECC’s Meyer and Housler win D9-AA doubles crown

DuBOIS - Elk County Catholic’s Abby Meyer and Loreal Housler captured the District 9 tennis doubles championship on Tuesday by defeating their teammates, Laira Reuscher and Maria Gismondi, in the finals. The tournament was played at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Housler and Meyer reached the finals by defeating St. Marys Area’s Chelsea Agosti and Aubrey Wiesner 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals they beat Brockway’s Abigail Larson and Cassandra Foradori 6-1, 6-3.

Lady Crusader volleyball downs Lady Dutch 3-1

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team defeated the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch by a 3-1 score in a match played at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Crusaders won the first set 25-21. The Lady Dutch took the second set 25-17 to even the match at 1-all.
The Lady Crusaders beat St. Marys 25-16 and took the final set 25-10 to win the match 3-1.
“I think we were worried about coming out flat after last Thursday’s win over Bradford,” said ECCHS coach Diane Gies.

St. Marys cross country squads sweep Brookville

The St. Marys Area boys and girls cross country squads both picked up wins over Brookville on Tuesday afternoon in a meet at the St. Marys Area High School.
The boys won 18-43 while the girls won 18-45.
In the boys' race, St. Marys Area's Alec Foster finished in first place with a time of 17:57. He was followed across the line by his teammate Dylan Shields in 18:21. Brookville's Shane Hummel was third in 18:34, while St. Marys runners Austin Frey and Nate McFadden were fourth and fifth with times of 19:02 and 19:27, respectively.
