Ryan R. Mack

December 19, 2011

Ryan R. Mack, 54, of Tyler Road, Penfield, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011.
He was born Oct. 21, 1957 in Warren, Ohio, son of the late Roy J. Mack Sr. and Edith Mae (Governor) Mack.
He was a 1976 graduate of St. Marys Area High School and worked as a warehouse manager for Georgino Industrial Supply for 30 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a horticulturalist, enjoying music and especially flowers. He was raised in Benezette and had been a Bennetts Valley resident since 1968.

Outdoor furnaces subject of heated debate at Jay Twp.

At Thursday's meeting of the Jay Township Board of Supervisors, an ongoing dispute between neighbors again brought the issue of outdoor furnaces as a public nuisance to the forefront.
Sid and Eileen Dolansky have for months been after the board to intervene on their behalf and stop neighbor Howie Barnett from what they claim is constant burning of his outdoor furnace. They cited adverse effects, including health problems and air pollution, as well as diminished property values.

Train station under restoration to bring back its original luster

Dennis D. Heindl and the Ridgway community are collaborating to restore the historic train station located along North Broad Street in Ridgway.
According to William Gentilman, Property Manager for the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad, Inc., the building was built the year 1907.
“The station was built the last year the Philadelphia & Erie Railroad was in existence,” said Gentilman. “The line the station is on was a part of the Pennsylvania Railroad section that ran from Erie to St. Marys, and the track is still there.”
The restoration of the building has been nearly 20 years in the making.

Lady Dutch rally past DCC to reach final

The St. Marys Lady Dutch basketball squad overcame a 12-point first quarter deficit to rally past the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals 40-36 during the opening round of the 2011 St. Marys Area Lady Dutch Girls Basketball Tournament at St. Marys Area High School on Friday evening. The Lady Dutch will face off against Keystone tonight at 8 p.m. for the championship.

Lady Crusaders defeat Kane Lady Wolves 46-37

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 46-37 victory over the Kane Lady Wolves in an AML game played at the ECCHS gym last night.
While Elk Catholic led at the end of every period, the Lady Wolves only trailed by one at the half, 19-18. In the second half, Elk Catholic outscored Kane by a 27-19 margin.
“I felt we played a very good second half,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.
“We went into halftime and made some adjustments and I thought we took advantage of our strengths,” said the coach.

DA investigates election irregularities in Jay Twp. Auditor race

At last month's meeting of the Jay Township board or supervisors, newly-elected township auditor John Bricen, fresh off his election day write-in victory over opponent Peggy Coppolo acknowledged a controversy involving improprieties with his campaign literature and a resultant complaint filed by Coppolo accusing him of violating election law.
"There seems to be some controversy over my handout literature having the proper documentation on the bottom, having a complaint filed, I understand that, that happens," Bricen said.

James J. “Jim” Salvamoser

James J. “Jim” Salvamoser, 71, of 349 Kinzua Avenue, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011.
Born Jan. 9, 1940, in Kane, he was a son of Francis “Frank” and Julia Powley Salvamoser. On Aug. 26, 1961, in Mt. Jewett, he married Marjorie Kimbrough who survives. Jim and Margie recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Rosalie Mae Glatt

Rosalie Mae Glatt, 73, of 20 Mertz Avenue, St. Marys, died Thursday, December 15, 2011 at her home following a lengthy illness.
She was born May 1, 1938 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Ralph N. and Ruth St. John Dorio. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1956.
On February 2, 1957 in the Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, she married Andrew Glatt who preceded her in death on September 12, 1995.

Lawrence L. Fantechi

Lawrence L. Fantechi, 78, of 136 Rambler Rd., St. Marys, died on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born August 28, 1933 in Byrnedale, son of the late Bruno and Theo Klaiber Fantechi.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Weedville High School, Class of 1951. He was a retired employee of the Pure Carbon Co., retiring in 1998 after 33 years of service.
On June 14, 1958, in the St. Boniface Church, he married Joyce E. Bauer. She survives.

Cameron County rallies to beat Dutch wrestlers 43-30

The Cameron County Red Raider wrestling team rallied to defeat the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 43-30 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
St. Marys was able to build a 30-6 lead through 152 pounds but were unable to score in the final seven weight classes.
“We didn’t put a point on the board from 152 on and I think our inexperience really showed tonight,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra.
“We’re a little banged up and moved some kids around tonight and it showed,” said Surra.
“Hats off to Cameron County, they wrestled tonight. We just didn’t do it,” added coach Surra.
