Jerome T. "Jump" Hasselman

November 20, 2011

Jerome T. "Jump" Hasselman, 77, of 122 Laurel Lane, Kersey, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at his residence.
He was born Dec. 29, 1933, in St. Marys, son of the late George and Anna Woelfel Hasselman.
On June 2, 1956, in the St. Mark Church in Emporium, he married Mary C. Brennan, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1951. He was the owner of the former Weigh Scale Bar in St. Marys and the Wayside Inn in Kersey and retired as an insurance inspector for MIB of Harrisburg.

Mt. Jewett station sees high opening-day bear harvest

MT. JEWETT – If the number of bears processed over the weekend at the bear check station located at the Mt. Jewett Fire Hall in McKean County is any indication, hunters are meeting with quite a bit of success in their quest to bag a bruin this year.

Medicare open enrollment deadline Dec. 7

Anyone using Medicare insurance products will have until Dec. 7 to make changes to their coverage plans under the “open enrollment” period.
Medicare is federal health insurance for people age 65 or older; people under 65 with certain disabilities; and people who have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or permanent kidney failure.

Jay Twp. auditor acknowledges controversy surrounding his victory

John Bricen, Jay Township's newly elected write-in auditor, in speaking before attendees at Thursday's meeting of the board of supervisors, began by thanking all those who has turned out to vote this past Election Day. Bricen also had the opportunity to address perceived discrepancies involving his campaign, specifically his campaign literature.
"There seems to be some controversy over my handout literature having the proper documentation on the bottom, having a complaint filed, I understand that, that happens," Bricen said.

A Memorial Mass for Edith J. Bogacki will be held in St. Leo’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Fr. Brian Vossler, pastor. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
There will be no visitation. Funeral arrangements, are under the direction of the Meehan-Shilk Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Leo’s School, 17 Depot St., Ridgway, PA 15853.

FOX TWP. - Those seeking treatment for basic healthcare services may now utilize “The Clinic at Walmart," a newly opened facility operated by DuBois Regional Medical Center (DRMC) in affiliation with DuBois Regional Medical Group, inside the Walmart Supercenter located along the Million Dollar Highway.
The clinic provides convenient, affordable access to basic healthcare services, seven days a week, with no appointment necessary. Hours for the walk-in care facility are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. No appointments are needed or taken.

PA Wilds juries new members as part of Artisan Trail initiative

The Pennsylvania Wilds recently brought in seven new artists and three new trail stops from the 12-and-a-half county PA Wilds region.
Ta Enos, PA Wilds Small Business Ombudsman, says the artisan trail initiative has been in place since 2003 and is a project of the PA Wilds.
“It focuses on raising profitability and promoting artists in our region,” Enos said. “The brand displays high quality products so they can be sold at a higher price, and it helps artists get their products to market.”

Foul play not suspected in death of Kane woman

Foul play is not suspected in the death of a 25-year-old Kane woman whose body was found Thursday afternoon behind a garage on Commons Alley in the borough.
"We don't suspect foul play," Kane Borough Police Chief Brian Hillard said Friday in commenting on the death of Natasha Mattis of Pine Avenue.
According to the police chief, the cause of death will be determined at an autopsy in Erie. He said Dr. Eric Vey, the Erie County forensic pathologist, is expected to conduct the autopsy Monday.

In looking at this year's budget at Thursday's meeting of the Jay Twp. Board of Supervisors, board members expressed concern at the possibility that township expenses will exceed expected income due to a lull in tax revenue.

PA Wilds juried artist new to area

Stacie Johnson-Leske a ceramics artist recently relocated to the area with her husband because she was intrigued by the Pennsylvania Wilds.
“My husband and I like to do outdoorsy things for our anniversary every year,” said Johnson-Leske. “We researched the PA Wilds and found that Ridgway had both bicycle trails and kayaking. So we stayed at a bed and breakfast in St. Marys and visited Ridgway.”
Able to create her art anywhere, Johnson-Leske had made the transition to Ridgway.
