In speaking with area residents about the impact Sept. 11, 2001 had on their personal lives, outlooks, and relationships, it became evident that the events of that day have not faded from memory and still continue to exert a dramatic influence on the American consciousness.

Over 30 area motorcyclists join in America's 9/11 Ride

Recently a group of 30 motorcycle enthusiasts from throughout the area embarked on America's 9/11 Ride, a project organized by America's 911 Foundation, Inc., which visited each of the crash sites in Pennsylvania, Virginia and New York City as part of a 1,000-mile journey.
Julie and Jeff Smith of St. Marys acted as the local location hosts, having traveled with the memorial ride in 2008. Jeff has been a member of the Crystal Fire Department since 1980, having served as a firefighter, driver, EMT and chairman of the board.

ECC soccer wins county tournament

Elk County Catholic won the Elk County Soccer Tournament with a 3-0 win over St. Marys in the championship game Saturday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
"I think we came out strong," Elk County Catholic coach Adam Bailey said. "We seemed to be direct and straight to where we needed to be early on. But the game shows we still have lots of things to do. I'm happy for St. Marys, we play them every year, it's always a strong game to play St. Marys. You cannot take them lightly. We were fortunate this year, in other years, we haven't been."

Lady Elkers win Elk County volleyball tourney

The Ridgway Lady Elkers captured the 2011 Elk County Volleyball Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Elk County Catholic High School gymnasium.
The Lady Elkers won the 15th annual event by defeating the ECCHS Lady Crusaders two games to one in the best-of-three finals.
In the consolation game, the Johnsonburg Ramettes took third place by defeating the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch 30-24.
In pool play, Elk Catholic finished the morning play with a 5-1 record. Ridgway was 4-2, while the Ramettes were 3-3 and the Lady Dutch 0-6.

St. Marys cross country teams perform well at Forest Hills

SIDMAN – The St. Marys Area High School cross country teams competed in the Forest Kills 5k Invitational on Saturday in Sidman, with the girls' squad finishing seventh out of 18 and the boys placing 10th out of 21.
"On a very wet day and muddy course, the cross country teams performed well in Sidman," said St. Marys Area coach Stan Foster.

Lady Dutch soccer team falls to Clearfield 4-0

The Lady Dutch were handed a 4-0 loss by the Clearfield Lady Bisons on Saturday morning in a match played under partly sunny skies at the St. Marys Area High School's soccer field.
Prior to the playing of the national anthem, St. Marys Area School District Activities Director Terry Straub addressed the crowd and asked everyone to join in honoring the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and all of the country's servicemen and women.

William Harold Covert Jr.

William Harold Covert Jr., 82, of 302 Vernon Ave., Ridgway, died Friday, September 9, 2011, at his residence.
He was born March 22, 1929, in East Smethport, the son of the late William H. and Catherine Marie Oviatt Covert Sr. On April 5, 1991, he married Laura Mae Dickinson, who survives.

Raymond J. Blair Sr., 94, of 144 Blair Road, St. Marys, died at his residence on Saturday, September 10, 2011 following an illness of the past year.
He was born February 27, 1917 in Niagara Falls, N.Y., a son of the late Fedell and Caroline Groll Blair. On March 24, 1943, he married the late Wanda Dukich Blair, who preceded him in death on May 1, 2001.
