Esther J. "Eck" Bickmire, 91, a resident of the Rouse Warren County Home in Youngsville, died there Monday morning, Jan. 31, 2011 after an extended illness.Â
She was born Nov. 5, 1919 in Brockport, daughter of the late Richard and Maude McManigle Brenton.Â On July 12, 1952 at Sacred Heart Church in St. Marys, she married Walter "Wally" Bickmire, who preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 2002.
ECC travels to Sheffield tonight
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders evened their District 9 League record at 2-2 with a 52-48 victory over the Brookville Lady Raiders Saturday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders controlled the first half of play when they outscored the Lady Raiders by a 30-18 margin. In the second half, Brookville outscored the Lady Crusaders by a 30-22 margin.
â€śThis was a hard-fought game. Brookville played exceptionally well tonight. They are a well-coached team,â€ť said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.
Robert J. "Limpy" Redmond Sr., 78, of Dill Hill Road, Johnsonburg, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center following a short illness.
He was born March 12, 1932 in Johnsonburg, son of Stanley and Mildred (Tarnowski) Redmond Sr.
On June 26, 1951, he married Sara (Gapinski) Redmond and she preceded him in death on Aug. 29, 2001.
He lived in Johnsonburg all his life and worked most of his life with Redmond Bros. Ready Mix Company of Ridgway, retiring in 1990.
Eleanor R. "Boogie" Byers, 84, of 7190 Ridgway-St. Marys Rd., Ridgway, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 28, 2011, at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 11, 1926 in Clearfield, daughter of the late John and Ruth (Ardary) Dush.
She married Maurice S. "Fats" Byers on Dec. 12, 1949, and he preceded her in death.
LeRoy E. Bedford Jr., 45, of East Main Street, Ridgway, died unexpectedly at home on Friday, January 28, 2011.
He was born Feb. 25, 1965 in Ridgway, a son of the late LeRoy E. and Jean (Stelene) Bedford Sr.
Â He is survived by three children, Chastity Bennett of Massachusetts, Hope Bedford of North Carolina and Kacie Bedford of Crosby; seven grandchildren; a sister, Debra Eck of Jersey Shore; and several nieces and nephews, including Alisha Bedford of Williamsport.
The St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce recognized the 2010 Businesses of the Year during the organization's 27th annual dinner held Saturday evening at the Red Fern.
Northwest Savings Bank and The Elk County Community Foundation took home top honors in the large and small business categories, respectively. Runners-up included Community Nurses, Inc. (large) and the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home (small).
A sizable crowd gathered at Elk County Catholic High School on Saturday morning for the seventh annual ECC Cheer Frenzy.
According to Marlene Stubber, competition director, 14 teams participated in this year's event.
"I was very happy [with the turnout]. I think the gym was full and everyone seemed to be having a lot of fun," Stubber said. "The teams had clean performances [Saturday], which is always a nice bonus. All the team members worked so hard and it's nice to see when they can hit their routine to the best of their ability, and I think we had a lot of clean routines."
This February, the Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous will turn 12 years old. The popular event runs from Feb. 19-26.
While the event has evolved over the years, so has the planning, as committee members' efficiency constantly improves.

LeRoy Swanson, 84, of 151 Dagus Mines Rd., Kersey, died Thursday evening, January 27, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 18, 1927 in Dagus Mines, a son of the late Frederick and Christine Mosier Swanson.
On Feb. 7, 1948 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, he married the late Marcella Geitner Swanson, who preceded him in death on Nov. 22, 2005.
