Board members honored at SMASD meeting

November 15, 2011

Honor roll certificates were presented to members of the St. Marys Area School District board of directors in recognition of their service during Monday's meeting as part of a statewide effort on behalf of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association to acknowledge and honor school directors for their years of service.
Certificates were presented to James Baumgratz, Joseph Goetz, John Mulcahy and Patricia Razmerski.

Public education celebrated during 'American Education Week'

Public schools across the nation, including those in the St. Marys Area School District, are planning a variety of activities this week in celebration of "American Education Week" (AEW) taking place from Nov. 13-19.
Sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA), American Education Week is "Celebrating 90 Years of Public Education" as its 2011 theme.

ECCOTA presents ‘Heart in the Arts’ awards at gala

ST. MARYS - Elk County Council on the Arts (ECCOTA) presented awards to individuals who have contributed to the arts in Elk County at the organization’s annual gala Saturday evening. The Monte Carlo-themed event was held at the Diamond View Restaurant in St. Marys.
Abbi Peters, ECCOTA executive director, said this is the first year the awards have been presented. Titled “Heart in the Arts,” the awards were founded based on ECCOTA’s mission statement and were designed to “honor organizations and individuals for providing experience, opportunity and support.”

Elk County a buyer's market for homes

ST. MARYS - While Elk County was not spared by the national housing crisis, local realtors say that comparatively it has fared better than other parts of the country. While certain realtors cite an increase in sales in recent years and others a drop, there is a general consensus that property values in the area have depreciated, resulting in the confluence of a buyer-oriented market.
According to the National Association of Realtors, pending home sales nationwide declined in September, but activity has increased since this time last year.

School district files Notice of Intervention

RIDGWAY - The Ridgway Area School District Board of Directors approved a resolution for their solicitor to file a Notice of Intervention concerning a tax assessment appeal filed by Metaldyne Sintered Products currently pending in the Court of Common Pleas.
According to finance manager Brent Rhoads, Metaldyne appealed their tax assessment concerning both the Ridgway and St. Marys properties.
Rhoads said their appraisal could mean a loss to the school district of about $30,000 per year.
Rhoads said the Board of Appeals has rejected their appeal against Elk County.

Judith Ann Rhines Nagel

Judith Ann Rhines Nagel, 75, of Hickory Street, Johnsonburg, died on Monday, Nov. 14, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness. She had recently been living with her daughter-in-law, Susan L. Rhines, in St. Marys.
She was born Feb. 16, 1936 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Roland Akers and Idabelle (Lynch) Akers–Willow.
She married Francis H. Rhines Jr. in 1955. He died in 1984. She married her second husband, Gerald C. Nagel, in 1992. He died in 2011.

Clearfield Bisons defeat Dutchmen 28-7 for 9-AAA title

DuBOIS - The Clearfield Bisons defeated the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 28-7 score Saturday afternoon at DuBois’ E.J. Mansell Stadium to capture the 2011 District 9 Class AAA football championship.
Clearfield will now meet Johnstown, the District 6 representative, Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Mansion Park in Altoona.
Clearfield took a 21-0 halftime lead. Each team scored a touchdown in the second half.
“I am really proud of my guys,” said St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm.
“Our season has had some incredible highs and some real lows but such is life,” said the coach.

American Legion Post 103 holds annual Veterans Day Banquet

Members of American Legion Post 103 held their annual Veterans Day Banquet at the Bavarian Hills on Saturday evening. According to Victor Straub, master of ceremonies for the event, 67 people were in attendance at this year's event. Straub also noted that the event was Post 103's 65th consecutive annual Veterans Day banquet.

Rep. Gabler: Veterans Day an opportunity to think

Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) served as the guest speaker at American Legion Post 103's annual Veterans Day banquet on Saturday evening at Bavarian Hills.
After reflecting upon the history of Veterans Day, Gabler remarked that the event served as a time "to stop and reflect on how thankful we all are as a nation for the sacrifices that are made to enable us to live as we do as Americans each and every day."
Gabler noted that he originally tried to come up with something 'unique' or 'profound' for the occasion, but then realize this was not what was needed.

William Q. "Beagle" Auman

William Q. "Beagle" Auman, 84, of 445 Benedict Street, St. Marys, died with his family by his side on Friday evening, Nov. 11, 2011 at his home following a brief illness.
He was born June 26, 1927 in St. Marys, a son of the late John R. and Genevieve M. Dippold Auman.
On June 20, 1964 in St. Joseph's Church in Force, he married Angeline "Angie" Panighetti Auman, who survives.
