Water issues discussed at gas task force meeting

In speaking to those assembled at Thursday's meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force at the St. Marys Area Middle School, speakers Professor Ross Pifer of the Penn State Dickinson School of Law and attorney Tom Wagner of Meyer and Wagner in St. Marys discussed resources and legal precedents surrounding the possibility of water contamination as a result of Marcellus Shale drilling.

Lady Dutch volleyball handed 3-0 loss by Bradford

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team is now 3-3 on the season after a 3-0 loss to the Bradford Lady Owls Thursday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Owls took the first game 25-21. They won the second game 25-11 and took the third game 25-12 to win the match in three straight.

Ridgway volleyball hands ECC 3-0 defeat

The Ridgway Lady Elker volleyball team improved to 7-0 on the season as they handed the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader squad a 3-0 loss at the ECCHS gym.
The Lady Elkers won all three games by identical 25-23 scores.
“We came off of Tuesday’s match with Kane knowing that they did not see us at our best,” said Ridgway coach Janet Redmond. “We had a very good practice last night. The girls are determined and we had a good competitive match against Elk Catholic.”

Coudersport blanks Dutch soccer 2-0

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen boys' soccer team was shut out 2-0 by the Coudersport Falcons on Thursday afternoon in a match played at the St. Marys Area High School soccer field.
"We were outplayed today. We didn't play as a team like we've been in the couple recent games and it showed out there. They outplayed us the whole game. They looked like the better team," said St. Marys coach Russ Micale.

Lady Rovers nip ECC 3-2 in overtime

ST. MARYS - It took 2:25 of the overtime period for the Brockway Lady Rovers to complete their rally and go home from Benzinger Park Thursday afternoon with a 3-2 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders in girls' varsity soccer action.
Brockway freshman Julie Esposito got in behind the ECC defense and scored the winning goal after the Lady Rovers had come from two goals down.

Landowner rights focus of gas task force meeting

The Elk County Gas Task Force's meeting Thursday night at the St. Marys Area Middle School drew landowners from across the region hoping to better understand the resources at their disposal, as well as their rights as property owners in the Marcellus Shale era.
Guest speakers Tom Wagner, Esq., of Meyer and Wagner in St. Marys, and Professor Ross Pifer of the Penn State Dickinson School of Law, spoke with attendees about various legal aspects dealing with Marcellus Shale, beginning with the initial stages of lease negotiations.

CEC celebrates 20th anniversary

ST. MARYS - The Community Education Council of Elk and Cameron Counties (CEC), an organization dedicated to providing postsecondary educational opportunities and professional and workforce development in the region, is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
CEC past and present employees, board members and stakeholders attended a luncheon sponsored by the Stackpole Hall Foundation on Tuesday at the Diamond View Restaurant in St. Marys to mark the occasion. CEC Executive Director Kris Kronenwetter welcomed attendees to the event.

United Way striving to reach $205,000 goal

The St. Marys Area United Way is counting on local residents to help their community by contributing to the organization's 2011 goal of $205,000.
The annual fall United Way kickoff campaign launched recently as part of the inaugural class of the 2011 Leadership Elk County (LEC) program held at Camp Kaelber.
St. Marys Area United Way Executive Director Sherron McGowan and UW Board of Directors President Becky Piccolo were in attendance, both of whom addressed members of the class.
McGowan encouraged the new LEC class to adopt the United Way's tagline of, "Give. Advocate. Volunteer."

Residents alert DEP regarding Caledonia Bridge project

On Monday morning, representatives from the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), responding to calls from Jay Township residents, arrived at and assessed the Caledonia Bridge refurbishment project for any impropriety and possible environmental hazards or offenses.
At last Thursday's meeting of the Jay Township Supervisors, the cleaning and re-painting of the bridge was the subject of much controversy among residents and supervisors.

Mary Louise Krieg

Mary Louise Krieg, 84, of Elco Glen, St. Marys, and formerly of 138 Queens Rd., St. Marys, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011 at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 17, 1926 in Ford City, daughter of the late Edward L. and Anna McGinley Shields.
On March 3, 1945, in the Sacred Heart Church, she married George R. Krieg, who preceded her in death on July 11, 2001.
Mrs. Krieg was raised in St. Marys and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School. She was a retired employee of AAA and in her early years, worked for the War Department in Washington, D.C.
