Dutch soccer team picks up 7-1 win over Smethport

Tuesday was a nice afternoon to be out enjoying a soccer match and the spectators who attended the boys' soccer match at St. Marys Area High School were treated to a dominating performance by the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen soccer squad, who picked up a 7-1 win over the visiting Smethport Hubbers. The match saw six different Dutch players score goals, while Brett Lanzel and Josh Burns split time at keeper for St. Marys.

Parking Authority finalizes details before being dissolved

The City of St. Marys Parking Authority held their final regular meeting on Tuesday evening inside City Hall.
The authority will be officially dissolved by City Council at its upcoming Sept. 19 meeting. It was established 49 years ago and was due to expire next year unless reauthorized by council.
"We are an arm and only make suggestions and manage finances, etc.," said Warren Stewart, a member of the authority. "The authority's job is to acquire land and funding for parking lots."

Ruptured gas line leads to evacuated homes, businesses

Contractors replacing the sidewalk at the corner of Washington and Lafayette streets in St. Marys struck a gas line, causing it to rupture Tuesday morning. As a precaution, the fire department evacuated between 10 and 20 residents from Lafayette and Madison streets, as well as businesses in the vicinity, including Nicklas Insurance and County National Bank. The Elks Club was empty at the time.
Crystal Fire Department Fire Chief Bill Kraus said the call was received at 10:55 a.m.

Fox Township supervisors address business items

Among items recently approved by the Fox Township Supervisors were a zoning ordinance and map amendments.
"The Planning Commission has made a tremendous effort and we applaud them for their work. The board appreciates their efforts," said Supervisor Chairman Mike Keller.
Rosa Rano expressed concern about vehicles speeding along a portion of SR 948 near her home located near Main Street in Kersey.
"It's not safe, especially with kids walking to the park," Rano said.
She added that trucks using their jake breaks also pose a disturbance.

SMASD board of directors approves personnel items

At the recent meeting of the St. Marys Area Board of School Directors, the board approved several new personnel items.
All employment recommendations are provisional for 30 days pending receipt of Act 151 and Act 34 clearance documentation.
Professional personnel resignations were accepted for Theresa Dahl of St. Marys as a teacher.
Support personnel resignations were accepted for Jessica Yonkofski of Kersey as cafeteria monitor. Supplemental contract resignations were accepted for Mike Kunes as assistant football coach and weight room supervisor.

Edna M. Ginther

Edna M. Ginther, 85, of 669 Washington Street, died at her home on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 following an illness of the past several months.
She was born May 4, 1926 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Frank C. and Anna Loichinger Geeck.
On August 16, 1947 in St. Mary's Church Rectory, she married the late Richard Ginther, who preceded her in death on July 30, 2005.

Elk Catholic and Bradford golf teams tie at 213

The Elk County Catholic High School and Bradford Area High School golf teams tied at 213 in a match played at the St. Marys Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
The medalist for the day was Bradford's Josh Stauffer with a four-under-par round of 31. Elliott Struble was the medalist for Elk Catholic with a four-over-par round of 39.
Following Struble for the Crusaders were Brandon Schlimm with a 40, Jess Jaynes with a 44, Mitchell Struble and Drew Meyer with 45s, Bruno Cavalline with a 47, Bryan Haberberger with a 48 and Kristy Hanes with a 51.

Crusader soccer holds off Port Allegany 2-1

KERSEY – The Elk County Catholic Crusader soccer squad picked up a 2-1 victory over Port Allegany on Monday evening at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Fox Township.
"Port Allegany played a very good game," said Elk Catholic assistant coach T.J. Weaver. "The contest was well-played."
"Through the first part of the season, we are growing as a team," Weaver added. "The kids are growing in their positions."
The match started off with Elk Catholic dominating the first half. The Crusaders had 13 shots on goal compared to two for Port Allegany.

Brookville shuts out ECC girls' soccer

ST. MARYS - The Brookville Lady Raiders went home Monday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders in girls' varsity soccer.
    The Lady Raiders scored first just five and one half minutes into the contest, when junior Ashley Wolfe placed a shot into the net.
    Brookville went up 2-0 with 16:34 left in the first half when junior Annie Amsler tallied. Amsler would score again with only 46 seconds left in the game. Sophomore Michelle Crissman had put the Lady Raiders up 3-0 just under 10 minutes after intermission.

School board officials tout success of new academic year

At Monday's meeting of the St. Marys Area School Board, principals from the area's elementary, middle, and high schools declared the 2011- 2012 school year off to a good start. Christine Kuhar, principal at Bennetts Valley and Fox Township Elementary schools, said the numbers are holding steady, with 123 students at Bennetts Valley and 209 students at Fox Township.
Robert Grumley, principal of South St. Marys Street Elementary School, said the school has 99 new kindergarten students and 27 new students and transfers.
