Bavarian Fall Fest seeking vendors

Bavarian Fall Fest organizers are seeking qualified local vendors for the upcoming event taking place September 23 to 25 throughout downtown St. Marys.
Now in its second year, organizers are continuing to secure an array of vendors such as crafters, artists, food vendors, nonprofit organizations, home-based businesses, schools and clubs, to set up shop for a festive fall weekend.
"We are trying to keep the event to local vendors," said organizer Dolly Wehler. "We need vendors; we have everything else lined up."

Noxious weed survey receives positive response

According to Elk County Conservation District Manager Steve Putt, the noxious and invasive weed survey is receiving a positive response from county residents.
Putt has surveyed over 290 acres of land, finding the common Bush Honeysuckle and thistle plants on every site.
As of the last Conservation District meeting, Monday July 25, Putt has completed 11 of his 12 scheduled surveys.
"I'm finding a lot of Bush Honeysuckle, the stuff seems to be everywhere in this county," Putt said. "Thistle of course is everywhere, bull thistle and the other thistles."

Dolores S. "Lori" Schreiber, 80, of 253 Ford Rd., St. Marys, died unexpectedly on Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born on Feb. 1, 1931, in St. Marys, daughter of the late David and Isabell Krieg Caskey.
On Aug. 22, 1953, in the Sacred Heart Church, she married James J. "PeeWee" Schreiber. He preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1998.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. She was a retired employee of Airco Speer. She was a member of the Queen of the World Church, enjoyed going to camp and enjoyed her dogs, Molly and Libby.

David P. Smith

David P. Smith, 55 of, Hemlock Street, Kane, died on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at his home following a long illness.
He was born on November 17, 1955 in St. Marys, the son of the late William F. and Jane Krug Smith. On March 8,1986, in St. Leo’s Church in Ridgway, he married Mary Yonker, who survives.
He attended schools in St. Marys and had resided in St. Marys and Eldred before moving to Kane in 2006.

Herman J. Smith Jr., 60, of 711 Vine Road, St. Marys, died on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
He was born January 13, 1951 in St. Marys, a son of the late Herman J. and Anna B. Eckert Smith.

Louis Anthony “Lulu” Cherry

August 1, 2011

Louis Anthony “Lulu” Cherry, 76, of High Street, Johnsonburg, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
He was born January 21, 1935 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Tony and Emily (Papa) Cherry.
He married Nancy (Grunthaner) Cherry, who survives.
He lived all of his life in Johnsonburg and was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1954. He worked for Johnsonburg Borough for 40 years, retiring in 2009 as Street Supervisor. He was a member of Central Hose Company.

New baler would provide numerous benefits to center

A new baler is at the top of Elk County Recycling Coordinator Bekki Titchner's wish list for the Community Recycling Center, located in the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys. Titchner recently submitted an application to the Stackpole Hall Foundation requesting a grant to help cover the cost of the new equipment.


Yande charged with allegedly selling prescriptions to 'patients' for cash

HARRISBURG - A DuBois doctor who operated an osteopathic practice out of his home was charged Thursday with selling prescriptions to powerfully addictive narcotic medications in exchange for cash.
According to a press release posted on the state Attorney General's website, Attorney General Linda Kelly identified the defendant as Dr. Rajendra Yande, 47, of 633 Maple Ave. in Dubois. Yande began his practice in Dubois in early 2008 and runs his daily operations out of his Maple Avenue home.

Joan C. DeVillars, 74, of Montgomery and formerly of Sinclairville, N.Y., and Kane, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 in the Geisinger Medical Center at Danville.
She was born in Jamestown, N.Y., on Thursday, Jan. 28, 1937, the daughter of the late Kenneth and Doris (Billstone) Depledge.
She was the widow of Ralph R. DeVillars, who preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 2010.
She was a 1954 graduate of the Cassadaga Valley Central School and a 1957 graduate of the WCA Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed as a registered nurse by four hospitals for over 50 years.

Barbara Jean Bruni, 76, of 112 Meadow Lane, Kersey, died Friday, July 29, 2011, at her home after a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 27, 1934, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Floyd and Barbara Reuscher Hanes.
On July 16, 1955, she married Ronald L. Bruni, who survives.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1952. She enjoyed her family and grandchildren and enjoyed playing cards and bingo.
