Lawrence F. Serafini

Lawrence F. Serafini, 67, of 101 N. Mill St., Ridgway, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born February 20, 1944, in Ridgway, the son of the late Benny and Mary Cantafio Serafini Sr.
He had lived most of his life in Ridgway. Larry enjoyed bowling. He had been employed at Clarion Sintered Metals for 40 years, retiring in 2006.

Helen A. Krug

Helen A. Krug, 86, of 288 Ford Rd., St. Marys, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor after a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 9, 1924 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Michael and Helena Bizjak Ausserer.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of St. Marys High School.
For 25 years, she worked at Powdered Metal Products, retiring in 1988. She was a member of Queen of the World Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing and being with her family.

Residents receive water shutoff messages in error

In the days leading up to Tuesday, residents throughout St. Marys and Fox Township received automated phone messages from the St. Marys Water Authority informing them that their water would be shut off on Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. According to water authority secretary Dorothy Meyer, many of those calls were sent out by mistake.
“We have a new automated system that will call customers in an affected area,” Meyer explained.

Benezette, Dagus Mines post offices under review by USPS

The United States Postal Service (USPS) released a list on Tuesday afternoon of around 3,700 post office locations across the United States that are currently under review for possible closure. Of those locations, two are in Elk County: Benezette and Dagus Mines.
In a release issued Tuesday by the USPS on its website, the organization discussed the reasoning behind its review of the offices.

Blast in the Burg expected to draw large crowd

Area spectators will have the opportunity to witness performances by eight open class drum corps at Blast in the Burg II, taking place Thursday, Aug. 4 beginning at 6 p.m. at Memorial Field in Johnsonburg.

Body of brave soldier back home in Kane

Ken VanGiesen is home again.
The body of the 30-year-old soldier killed in Afghanistan last week arrived in Kane shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday following an emotional procession from the Bradford Airport in Lafayette Township.
An estimated 85 patriotic motorcycle riders accompanied the cortege, which included two military vans for the soldier's family and a hearse that carried the body to the Ronald McDonald II Funeral Home along South Fraley Street.

District hires superintendent

The Ridgway Area School District held a special meeting Tuesday afternoon to appoint Dr. Michael O'Brien as the new superintendent.
Dr. Tom Butler attended his last RASD school board meeting to congratulate and welcome Dr. O'Brien to his new role with the school district.
"It's been a joy, this is a great school district and I know Dr. O'Brien and his wife will be welcomed to the community," Butler said. "You will have a great time."
The board voted unanimously in favor of appointing O'Brien as superintendent, effective Aug. 9, 2011 and ending Aug. 8, 2014, at a salary of $115,000.

Andrew T. “Tim” Bolden

Andrew T. “Tim” Bolden, 48, of 304 Maurus Street, St. Marys, died Monday, July 25, 2011 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital after an illness of the past several years.
He was born December 12, 1962 in Cumberland, Md., son of the late Donald P. Bolden Sr., who died in 1989, and Sara (Sally) Murphy Bolden, who survives, of St. Marys.
On September 17, 1983, in St. Boniface Church, Kersey, he married Ann M. Schneider, who survives.

Eugene W. Sweeney

Eugene W. Sweeney, 90, died Monday, July 11, 2011 after a short illness.
He was born February 20, 1921 to the late Thomas W. and Jane Pick Sweeney in Johnsonburg and attended local schools there.
On February 5, 1946, he married Georgia E. Smith of St. Marys in the St. Mary's Catholic Church.
