Gail L. Cool

August 5, 2011

Gail L. Cool, 64, of 524 Schissle St., St. Marys, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011 at her residence after an illness of the past several months.
She was born Oct. 10, 1946, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Elmer and Edna Wickett Wendel. On Sept. 26, 1964, in the St. Mary's Church, she married James E. Cool, who survives.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. She had lived in Grand Forks, N.D. for several years and was a graduate of Aaukers Business College in Grand Forks. She was a former employee of Elite Metals and Carbon City Products.

Jeffrey S. Ginther

Jeffrey S. Ginther, 36, of Liberty Borough, died on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at Select Speciality Hospital in McKeesport.
He was born on Sept. 24, 1974 in McKeesport, the son of Raymond and Linda Musisko Ginther of Liberty Borough, who survive.
He was a 1993 graduate of South Allegheny High School and worked as a manager for GNC (General Nutrition Corp.).

Matthew J. Minnick

Matthew J. Minnick, 37, of 444 Chestnut St., St. Marys, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011 in St. Marys.
He was born on Jan. 21, 1974 in Ridgway, the son of Robert and Katherine Lion Minnick of St. Marys, who survive. On Nov. 5, 1999, in St. Marys, he married Elizabeth (Beth) Kamats, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Elk County Christian High School, Class of 1992, and a graduate of Mercyhurst College, Class of 1996.
He loved the outdoors, woodcarving, hunting and spending time with his children.
He was an employee of Metaldyne in Ridgway.

Supervisors continue to review proposed ordinance

On Wednesday evening, the Fox Township Supervisors heard testimony from several residents regarding the township's proposed zoning ordinance and map amendments. As part of the proposed zoning ordinance, the township is looking to specify requirements for outdoor furnaces, woodburners, oil and gas wells and windmills.
Supervisor Randy Gradizzi said he is happy with the outdoor furnace ordinance but wants to look at setback issues for the water course.
"It's an important issue and we're not going to move too quick," said Mike Keller, supervisor chairman.

CWF visits Ridgway Fire Hall

The CWF (Championship Wrestling Federation) is returning to the area to present the "Ridgway Rumble" Saturday night, with bell-time slated for 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.
"I'm so excited for the show to take place," Bill "Powerhouse" Hughes said. "The Elk County region is our home away from home. We're hoping to get up there more often."
The show is a benefit for James Bodien and his family. He was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease, a disorder passed down through families in which certain nerve cells in the brain waste away or degenerate.

Program sees several revisions

Rain, rain does not keep away Kaulmont Park Activity Day participants

Rainy weather Wednesday morning did little to dampen the spirits of a handful of area youth who turned out for Kaulmont Park's annual Activity Day.
According to Liz Dippold, a recreation assistant at the park who has been involved with the event for the past four years, typically the event is attended by around 30 youngsters, many of whom live near the park. While this year's numbers were slightly lower, likely due to the weather, the participants were eager to take part in a variety of events that included a Frisbee throw, soccer kick, obstacle course and archery shoot.

Eileen R. Catalano

Eileen R. Catalano, 82, formerly of Kaul Avenue, St. Marys, died peacefully and with her family by her side on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born in St. Marys on Oct. 13, 1928, daughter of the late Fred and Eleanor (Zimmett) Caseman.
On March 31, 1948 she married Albert A. Catalano. He preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 2003.
She was a graduate of Central Catholic High School.
She worked many years at Stackpole and later was a volunteer in the Hospitality Shop at the Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital.

Floyd J. "Boomer" Eckert

Floyd J. "Boomer" Eckert, 89, of 1471 Rosely Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
He was born May 8, 1922, in St. Marys, son of the late Henry and Anna Haberberger Eckert. On Nov. 16, 1946, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Margaret "Tonie" Paropacic, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. He was a retired employee of the Stackpole Carbon Co., retiring in 1984 after 43 years of service.

Furthering care for veterans

With the creation of Elk County's veterans' task force only a few months old, county commissioners heard about another program Tuesday morning during a bimonthly board meeting.
Karen Leithner, hospice manager for Community Nurses, Inc. based out of St. Marys, informed commissioners Tuesday of a new initiative, "We Honor Veterans."
