Bogert House receives facelift

Members of the Ridgway Heritage Council are in the early stages of restoring the facade of the the historic Bogert House at 105 Main St. in downtown Ridgway.
"We thought in the short term it would be a good idea to start with the front of the building because that is what you see first," said Robert Imhof of the Heritage Council.
With the restoration of the facade, Heritage Council members hope to spark more interest from potential buyers and investors.
Once purchased, Imhof hopes to see the building restored to its intended use as a hotel or hotel/apartment building.

Marinell L. Rhines

Marinell L. Rhines, 63, of 120 W. Oilwell Street, St. Marys, died at her home on Sunday, July 24, 2011 following an unexpected illness. 
She was born January 10, 1948 in Ridgway, a daughter of the late Richard M. Rhines and Laura Pearl Rhines Gulnac.
Marinell graduated from Ridgway Area High School. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was
actively involved and enjoyed spending time. She retired from Osram Sylvania after more than 36 years of service. She also enjoyed crafts and spending time with her friends.

Area communities provide inspiration for O'Nan's latest work

Readers who pick up Pittsburgh-based author Stewart O'Nan's latest novel, "Emily, Alone" may be surprised to find that the main character, Emily Maxwell, is described as originally hailing from Kersey, Pa.
"Emily, Alone" was published in March, and a copy is available at the St. Marys Public Library.

Joseph A. Wickett

Joseph A. Wickett, 80, of 293 State Rd., St. Marys, died Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born on Nov. 6, 1930, in St. Marys, son of the late Joseph W. and Veronica Englehardt Wickett.
On April 14, 1956, in the St. Mary's Church, he married Rosemary Klein, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1948. He was a retired employee of National Fuel, retiring in 1989 after 38 years of service.

Shirley A. Fabino

Shirley A. Fabino, 79, of 155 1/2 Parade St., St. Marys, died Sunday, July 24, 2011, at the home of her daughter Shelley Dush of Washington Street, St. Marys, after a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 7, 1931, in Kane, daughter of the late Hilding and Ruth Sayers Anderson. On Sept. 24, 1948, in Ridgway, she married Archie J. Fabino, who preceded her in death on Jan. 14,1978.

Mary Lee Bloom

Mary Lee Bloom, 55, of 4 Gillouly Ave., Ridgway, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born April 28, 1956, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Robert H. and Loretta Hallinen Nussbaum. In 1975, in Johnsonburg she married Hubert J. Bloom Jr., who survives.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1974. She was employed as an LPN at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys and Ridgway.

Charles “Bernard” Moore

Charles “Bernard” Moore, 90, of Caledonia Pike, Caledonia, died Friday, July 22, 2011, at home after a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 14, 1920 in Weedville, son of the late Charles Otto and Effie May (Gardner) Moore. On March 4, 1946, he married Vendla Wilhelmina (Anderson), who preceded him in death on July 27, 1983.  
He was a graduate of Weedville High School, Class of 1939. He was born and raised in Elk County, and lived outside Niagara Falls, N.Y. until he came to Bennetts Valley in 1984.

Gertrude M. Brechtel

Gertrude M. Brechtel, 87, a resident of the Lutheran Home in Kane and formerly of St. Marys and Wilcox, died Sunday, July 24, 2011, at the Lutheran Home after a lengthy illness.
She was born Jan. 30, 1924, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Leo and Margaret Breindel Rettger. Her first husband, Bernard Bartasavich, preceded her in death. In 1968, she married Arthur Brechtel, who preceded her in death in 1977.

Eugene R. "Gene" Brechtel

Eugene R. "Gene" Brechtel, 84, of 159 Terra Cotta Rd., Johnsonburg, died Saturday afternoon, July 23, 2011, at Pincrest Manor in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Warren, son of the late Eugene F. and Madeline Weidert Brechtel. On April 7, 1948, he married Catherine J. Rezmerski, who died June 17, 1997.

St. Marys Senior stars fall to Crawford County 14-5

MT. JEWETT - The St. Marys Little League Baseball Senior all-stars lost a 14-5 contest to the Crawford County Mets in the finals of the Section 1 Tournament played at Mt. Jewett Saturday afternoon.
Crawford County advances to the state tournament, scheduled for July 27 through Aug. 1 at Emporium.
St. Marys held a 5-4 lead going into the sixth inning when Crawford County exploded for nine runs on four hits, five walks and two errors to take a 13-5 lead.
