The Northern Tier Community Action Corporation, as designated by the Elk County Board of Commissioners of Elk County, has been administering the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Grant Program in the amount of $176,810.
According to Richard Gavazzi, housing specialist for Elk County, Northern Tier Community Action will provide homelessness prevention services to Elk County residents who are at risk of becoming homeless and to rapidly re-house newly homeless individuals and families who are homeless as defined by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
Elk County citizen Bill Granche addressed members of city council during their meeting on Monday evening to request that council members pass a resolution expressing their support for federal House Resolution 1489.
Granche explained that he had already approached the Ridgway Borough Council regarding the same issue, which is being addressed through a grassroots effort.
"I'm part of a grassroots effort to deal with a national issue related to the Glass-Steagall Act. That was an act that was started off in 1933. It had a lot to do with money," Granche said.
St. Marys City Manager Dave Greene provided members of city council with an update on the progress on the construction of the Depot Street parking garage during their work session meeting on Monday evening.
Greene indicated that construction on the garage is currently about 67 percent complete.
"It's still on schedule to be completed by July 15 of this year. They're right now putting the roofs on each one of the structures," Greene said
He noted that the elevator will be installed soon and the painter is also currently on site working.
An overnight celebration of life and cancer survivorship, the 2011 American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Elk County is set for Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11 at the Fox Township Community Park in Kersey.
Team members walk around the clock in solidarity with the battle against cancer. This celebration brings together numerous groups and individuals concerned about cancer as part of a unified effort to fight back.
Bernice A. Chase, 83, recently of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Silver Creek Terrace and 310 W. Mill Street, St. Marys, died on Monday June 6, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
She was born February 14, 1928 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Cornelius and Beatrice Lawton Haney.
On August 26, 1965 in Sacred Heart Church, she married Joseph J. Chase, who survives.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Church. She worked at Stackpole Carbon for more than 23 years and enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
Paul C. â€śLaddâ€ť Stahli, 88, of Oak Street, Johnsonburg, died Sunday, June 5, 2011 at UPMC Hamot of Erie after a brief illness.
He was born December 24, 1922 in Ridgway, son of the late Paul J. and Helena A. (Kilhoffer) Stahli.
On October 11, 1947, he married Florence â€śSisserâ€ť (Yonker) Stahli, who preceded him in death on March 26, 2001. Â
St. Marys Area High School Class of 2011 student speakers Natalie Schwer, salutatorian, and Gianna DeMuro, valedictorian, recollected high school memories and hopes for the future during the school's annual commencement program held Friday evening.
As part of Schwer's speech, she referenced lessons portrayed in the Disney movie "Finding Nemo" as to what the new graduates may encounter in the real world following high school, including making new friends and embarking on a journey of self-discovery.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Through the course of several weeks of negotiations, the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority [JMA] has reached an agreement with Hunt Marcellus Operating Company, LLC, to sell treated water on an "as-needed" basis for use in its Marcellus Shale gas drilling operations.
One of the obligations of the agreement Hunt has already fulfilled is to make a $500,000 capital contribution to the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority for the purpose of making capital improvements to their water supply system in order to make available 300,000 gallons of water per day by Aug. 1 to Hunt Marcellus.
Lucille C. "Lucy" Deemer, 78, of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 108 Irishtown Road, Kersey, died on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born May 2, 1924 in Johnsonburg, a daughter of the late Oran and Elizabeth Silvis Corbet. On March 24, 1944 in Brookville, she married the late Charles Lee Deemer Sr., who preceded her in death on October 17, 1976.
Arthur N. Hillebrand, 82, of 1046 E. Eschbach Road, St. Marys, died on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie following a short illness.
He was born December 6, 1928 in Ambridge, a son of the late Joseph and Ida Hillebrand.
On October 28, 1950, in St. Mary's Church, he married the late Lillian "Mickie" Samick Hillebrand, who preceded him in death on December 5, 1995.
