Dutch soccer picks up 3-0 win over Rams

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen boys' soccer team shut out the Johnsonburg Rams 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon in a match played at the SMAHS soccer field.
The Dutchmen had two goals in the first half and one in the second to record the win.
"Both teams came out very, very slow at the beginning. We got fortunate and put the first one (goal) in and got lucky on an own goal that they scored, and that was enough to keep us ahead of the game. They came out hard in the second half and picked it up a little bit," said St. Marys coach Russ Micale.

Lady Dutch volleyball downs DuBois Area 3-1

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team handed the DuBois Area Lady Beavers a 3-1 loss Tuesday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Dutch took the first game by a 25-16 score. DuBois evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 win in the second game. The Lady Dutch won the third game 25-21 and the fourth game 25-16 to win the match.
“Chelsie Gaton was our player of the game with 11 kills and 14 service points. She also blocked well,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt.

St. Marys cross country squads beat Punxsutawney

The St. Marys Area High School cross country squads both picked up wins over Punxsutawney during a meet held at the St. Marys Area High school on Tuesday afternoon. The Dutchmen defeated the Chucks 27-29, while the Lady Dutch notched a 23-32 win over the Lady Chucks. Runners from DuBois Central Catholic also participated in the event.

Ramettes down Elk County Catholic volleyball

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg volleyball won 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 20-25, 25-15) over Elk County Catholic Tuesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
"It's a good win for the girls against a good team," Johnsonburg coach Bill Shuey said. "They hustled and they played hard. We seemed to be jelling as a team. We still have some things that we have to fix. All in all, they played hard. We minimized our mistakes."

Solid Waste Authority tours landfill

Tuesday afternoon's meeting of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority was held at the Veolia ES Greentree Landfill in Fox Township. Prior to the meeting, authority members toured the site by bus and received an update about what has been taking place.
The landfill, which was established in 1987 and changed hands several times before coming under its current management, encompasses about 3,000 acres, with between 400 and 500 acres currently active under the facility's permit boundary.

Council terminates tax collector position with regret

St. Marys City Council reluctantly terminated the services of its appointed Earned Income Tax (EIT) collector, St. Marys Tax Service, owned by Dave Farabaugh, due to a state mandate known as Act 32.
The state mandate, established in 2008, requires the restructuring of the Earned Income Tax Collection System for local governments and school districts. Entities were provided with a three-year window to complete the transition by January 2012.

Kane hospital has healthy financial condition

Bolstered by its business link with the Hamot Medical Center in Erie and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Kane Community Hospital (KCH) now has a healthy “bottom line.”
This is the “good news” message delivered Monday by KCH Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gary Rhodes in his annual report to the community.
According to figures released by Rhodes, KCH ended its fiscal year June 30 with a net income of $1,353,181. This is a “turn-around” of $1.56 million from the previous fiscal year that showed a loss of $209,000.

Officials approve policy revisions

Elk County Conservation District officials approved revisions to their personnel policy during Monday night's regular meeting.
The new Conservation District employee handbook contains 21 additional pages of policies, an improvement to its past six-page handbook.

Margaret B. Scaccia

Margaret B. Scaccia, 88, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Railroad Street, Daguscahonda, died on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born February 27, 1923 in Daguscahonda, a daughter of the late Joseph and Barbara Frances Bolitiski.
On June 25, 1943 in Daguscahonda, she married the late Henry Scaccia, who preceded her in death in 1983.
