Clyde F. Robison

September 29, 2011

Clyde F. Robison, 81, of Studio City, Calif., died on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 12, 1930 in St. Marys, the only child of the late Francis and Deloris Robison.
He graduated from St. Marys Area High School and went on to serve in the Coast Guard. Most of his professional career was spent at Stackpole Components Company, with his last position being VP of Sales.
In 1976, he relocated to California after becoming a partner in Luscome Engineering, which he retired from in 2009.

Catherine A. "Kitty" Bergant

Catherine A. "Kitty" Bergant, 76, of 6515 Ridgway Rd., Johnsonburg, and formerly of Pittsburgh, died Tuesday evening, Sept. 27, 2011 at the residence of her daughter, Toni Ritchey, in Forbes Road.
She was born March 21, 1935 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Patsy and Theresa Steinbach Cherry
On March 2, 1962, in Johnsonburg, she married Donald J. Bergant, who preceded her in death on March 6, 2004.

Program seeks to educate parents in children's online activities

A crowd of parents, school administrators and faculty gathered in the St. Marys Area High School auditorium Wednesday night for a presentation aimed at teaching them how to better protect their children online.
Chief Todd Caltagarone and Officer D.J. Marconi of the St. Marys City Police Department, along with Tracey Myers from Dickinson Center's Children Preventative Services program, presented information on common online practices of children and some of the dangers inherent in those activities.

West Creek Wetlands Learning Center open to public

The new West Creek Wetlands Learning Center, created by the Elk County Conservation District (ECCD), is now open to the public following a ribbon- cutting ceremony held Wednesday afternoon at the site.
Elk County Watershed Specialist Kim Bonfardine welcomed attendees and provided a tour of the new center, which has been 10 years in the making.
"This project signifies persistence, hard work and partnerships with volunteers, companies, businesses and organizations," said ECCD District Manager Steve Putt. "Without those participants and volunteers, this project couldn't have happened."

FOX TWP. – Following a tour of the Veolia ES Greentree Landfill on Tuesday afternoon, the Elk County Solid Waste Authority held its regular meeting.
Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner said the final medicine collection event of the year will be held this Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, from 8 a.m. to noon in the education center at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys.
"We typically get a couple hundred pounds," Titchner said of the event. "I expect we'll get at least that this year. People are becoming a lot more aware of this than when we first started."

'Hello Beautiful' day spa, full-service salon now open for business

Patrons can now schedule all of their beauty and health needs in one place at the Hello Beautiful complete day spa and full-service styling studio located at 233 Main St. in Ridgway.
Owners Michelle and Dan Howard celebrated the studio's opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon. A grand opening celebration will be held Oct. 15.
The complete day spa offers manicures, pedicures, facials, detoxifying and firming body wraps, a relaxation Jacuzzi room, massages, Reiki and a fitness room.

Edward M. McAlee, age 60, of High Street, Johnsonburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011 at Geisinger Medical Center of Danville, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Dec. 31, 1950 in Ridgway, son of Harold “Bud” and Lavina (Roberts) McAlee, deceased.
He worked as a Bell Tone hearing aide salesman, millwright at Johnsonburg paper mill, and manager of the Johnsonburg Elks Club where he also had served as Exalted Ruler. He also owned and operated the Kopper Kettle restaurant of Johnsonburg from October 1999 to May 2011.

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team defeated the Johnsonburg Ramettes 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon in a match played at the St. Marys Area High School.

Dutch soccer picks up 3-0 win over Rams

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen boys' soccer team shut out the Johnsonburg Rams 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon in a match played at the SMAHS soccer field.
The Dutchmen had two goals in the first half and one in the second to record the win.
"Both teams came out very, very slow at the beginning. We got fortunate and put the first one (goal) in and got lucky on an own goal that they scored, and that was enough to keep us ahead of the game. They came out hard in the second half and picked it up a little bit," said St. Marys coach Russ Micale.
