Mission trip experience meaningful for Kucenski

In late June, Elk County Catholic High School senior Sara Kucenski, of Ridgway, was one of seven western Pennsylvania youth who took part in a week-long mission trip to Honduras to dedicate a water filtration system in El Jaral, Honduras, which the students had spent the previous school year raising money to construct through an organization they formed called Pure Thirst. Pure Thirst worked in conjunction with The Rice Foundation, which was formed by Dr. Jeffrey Rice, and raised over $25,000 to construct the system.

Philip L. Woodford Jr., 52, of 8975 Hawthorne Rd., La Plata, Md., died August 23, 2011, as the result of a motorcycle accident, in White Plains, Md. He was born May 10, 1959, in St. Marys, the son of Philip L. and Lois Milliron Woodford Sr. On April 10, 1983, he married Anne’ Bonnagio, who survives.
Mr. Woodford had been a La Plata resident for 10 years. He was a member of the Moose Club. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and coin collecting. He was an avid Steelers fan.

Father wages nationwide fight against cystic fibrosis

Ronnie Werstler is on a one-man crusade, traveling the country in order to raise money and awareness for cystic fibrosis (C.F.). Werstler, a third degree blackbelt, is doing so by breaking two-by-fours with his bare hands for $100 donations. So far, his campaign has taken him to 48 states. He has appeared on "Lawman" with Steven Segal, as well as on "Good Morning America" with Diane Sawyer. He has also broken boards outside of Oprah Winfrey's studios in Chicago, landing him on the front page of the Sun-Times. On Tuesday, his quest brought him to St.

Officials take close look at CareerLink

With some budget cuts being anticipated, officials at the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] are looking at the region's various CareerLink sites.
"As we're working through the process with our partners, to date we've confirmed that Potter, McKean and Elk [counties] will all be able to remain comprehensive centers," said Susie Snelick, Workforce Investment Board Director. "That is the result of partners stepping up and looking at cost-savings, looking at budgets and being able to continue to contribute and maintain comprehensive sites.

Ronald L. Kuppelwiser, 68, of Long View Court, Weedville, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Christ the King Manor in DuBois after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 9, 1943 in St. Marys, son of the late Simon Kuppelwiser, who died in 1983, and Hazel Aunkst Kuppelwiser, who died in 2005.
He had lived in Lorain, Ohio for years. He was a tractor trailer driver for many years, working for Jefferson Trucking, Inc. in Ohio.

Marvin J. "Mike" Smithbauer

Marvin J. "Mike" Smithbauer, 81, of 227 John Street, St. Marys, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys.
He was born September 11, 1929 in St. Marys, a son of the late Raymond and Lavina Engelhart Smithbauer.
On April 4, 1964 in St. Marys, he married Delores Neubert Renwick Smithbauer, who survives.

Joan L. Kolash

Joan L. Kolash, 76, of Deer Lane, DuBois, died Thursday, August 25, 2011 at her residence.
Born on July 5, 1935 in Clearfield, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Muriel (Lawhead) Nelson.
On September 18, 1954, she married Joseph N. Kolash Jr. He preceded her in death on August 2, 2010.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church. She enjoyed bowling, crocheting, cooking, gambling, and painting crafts.

William L. Jacob

William L. Jacob, 94, of Silver Creek Terrace, St. Marys, died Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born October 4, 1916, in St. Marys, son of the late A. Thomas and Catherine Kriegel Jacob. He married Rose McLeod and she preceded him in death on May 6, 1979. He then married Virginia Richards and she preceded him in death on January 2, 1995.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1934. He was a self-employed plasterer.

Lois J. Bryndel

Lois J. Bryndel, 82, of 126 Elk Ave., Ridgway, died Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born August 10, 1929, in Ridgway, the daughter of the late William B. and Florence C. Hathorn Wagoner.
She married James E. Bryndel, who predeceased her on February 22, 2004.
She had been a lifelong Ridgway resident and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church. She was a longtime hospital volunteer and she attended many prayer groups. She especially enjoyed going out to eat with her family and friends.
