Donation made to sheriff's office

June 8, 2011

Northwest Savings Bank recently made a donation to the Elk County Sheriff's office on behalf of the women's handgun training program.
"The training program is conducted by a partnership of the Elk County Sheriff's office, the National Rifle Association and the Ridgway Rifle Club," said Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey C. Krieg. "The classes are usually held twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall."
The classes are conducted by deputy sheriffs Shawn Geci Sr. and John Gangloff, along with other members of the sheriff's department.

Truck driver points gun at township resident

BROCKPORT – Brockport resident Jeff Rhed attended Wednesday's Horton Township Supervisors meeting to request the installation of traffic signs along Shawmut Road after a truck driver pointed a pistol at him in front of his residence.
"I relayed a message to the state police about possibly getting a sign to post that reads that anything over 10,000 pounds has to go 25 miles per hour because those big gas trucks come wheeling down there at 45-50 miles per hour," Rhed said.

Geraldine M. Wildfire

Geraldine M. Wildfire, 80, of 173 Wehler Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at the Elk Regional Health Center after an illness of the past year.
She was born May 14, 1931, in DuBois, daughter of the late Charles L. and Josephine Kuharski Baker Dugan.
On April 23, 1955, in the St. Tobias Church in Brockway, she married Jerome C. Wildfire, who preceded her in death on June 1, 1994.

Officials tip hats for response

Officials Tuesday morning expressed gratitude for members of the county's emergency management services, as well as members of the Jay Township Volunteer Fire Department, for their quick and decisive action involving a downed aircraft May 13 in Benezette.
Brian C. Rayner, a senior air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, acknowledged county officials and volunteers for their hospitality and on-scene and followup support regarding their investigation.

Officials gave the go-ahead Tuesday for the sales agreement that will give Elk County the Industrial Technical Education Center [ITEC] facility located along Montmorenci Road in Ridgway Township.

Area dancers ready to showcase talents

Dancing zombies are just one of the interesting highlights at the April School of Dance 2011 revue taking place this weekend on Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11, at St. Marys Area High School.
Approximately 180 dancers, ranging in age from 4 years old to in their 20s, are putting the final touches on their dance routines, which feature such styles as tap, jazz, ballet, pointe, lyrical, hip hop, acrobatics, dance theatre and clogging.

Plan tweaked for housing program

The Northern Tier Community Action Corporation, as designated by the Elk County Board of Commissioners of Elk County, has been administering the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Grant Program in the amount of $176,810.
According to Richard Gavazzi, housing specialist for Elk County, Northern Tier Community Action will provide homelessness prevention services to Elk County residents who are at risk of becoming homeless and to rapidly re-house newly homeless individuals and families who are homeless as defined by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

Granche asks council to support H.R. 1489

Elk County citizen Bill Granche addressed members of city council during their meeting on Monday evening to request that council members pass a resolution expressing their support for federal House Resolution 1489.
Granche explained that he had already approached the Ridgway Borough Council regarding the same issue, which is being addressed through a grassroots effort.
"I'm part of a grassroots effort to deal with a national issue related to the Glass-Steagall Act. That was an act that was started off in 1933. It had a lot to do with money," Granche said.

Greene provides update on parking garage

June 6, 2011

St. Marys City Manager Dave Greene provided members of city council with an update on the progress on the construction of the Depot Street parking garage during their work session meeting on Monday evening.
Greene indicated that construction on the garage is currently about 67 percent complete.
"It's still on schedule to be completed by July 15 of this year. They're right now putting the roofs on each one of the structures," Greene said
He noted that the elevator will be installed soon and the painter is also currently on site working.

Elk County Relay for Life is going purple

An overnight celebration of life and cancer survivorship, the 2011 American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Elk County is set for Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11 at the Fox Township Community Park in Kersey.
Team members walk around the clock in solidarity with the battle against cancer. This celebration brings together numerous groups and individuals concerned about cancer as part of a unified effort to fight back.
