Holiday wreaths honor deceased veterans

Despite the cold and gloomy weather conditions Saturday morning, a group of area residents that included girl scouts and members of Elk County Catholic High School's Future Business Leaders of America Chapter gathered at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery to take part in the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony, which got underway at 12 p.m.
According to Dolly Wehler, who helps coordinate the annual event, roughly 420 holiday wreaths were being placed on veterans' graves this year.

District approves substitute teacher pay increase

Substitute teachers at St. Marys Area School District will now receive a rate of $100 per day, effective Jan. 1, 2015.
The SMASD board of directors also voted to reinstate a bonus of $500 for every 30 days of substitute teaching during the school year.
In addition, SMAHS Assistant High School Principal Joseph Schlimm will be moved from a 10-month to a 12-month administrator effective after Jan. 1, 2015. Salary and benefits are to be prorated for the remainder of the 2014-15 school year.

Candle vigil remembers world's lost children

RIDGWAY – "The biggest fear we have is that we won't be remembered."
Leslie Neal spoke those words during Sunday's candle lighting ceremony that she helped organize in an attempt to make sure that the area's deceased children will not be forgotten.
Last year, Neal, who lost her 16-year-old son in 2011, started a local candle lighting ceremony in Ridgway along with Elk County Commissioner Jan Kemmer to remember the area's children who died at a young age, much like her son.

Larry L. Harlan

Larry L. Harlan, 72, of 101 Frey Rd., Kersey, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014 at his residence after a lengthy illness.
He was born March 4, 1942 in St. Marys, son of the late Aileen Harlan.
On May 22, 1971, in St. Marys, he married Mary Ann Frey, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Schools. He was a retired employee of SGL, retiring in 2001 after 32 years of service.
Mr. Harlan enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

Bernard T. "Bernie" Gapinski

Bernard T. "Bernie" Gapinski, 86, of 407 High St., Johnsonburg, died Saturday morning, Dec. 13, 2014 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys following a brief illness.
He was born May 27, 1928 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Joseph and Josephine Butts Gapinski.
On Sept. 16, 1961 in Holy Cross Church, Brandy Camp, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Zambanini, and she survives.
A 1946 Johnsonburg High School graduate, he was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg Senior Center, and Knights of Columbus Council 2007.

Surra to head Fish and Game review team

It was recently announced that Governor-Elect Tom Wolf selected a variety of individuals from across the state to head transition review teams that will be tasked with examining various agencies, policies, and issues in an effort to aid him in starting off his first term as governor as effectively as possible. Among those individuals was Kersey resident Dan Surra, who will head the Fish and Game review team.

Jury: Weidow guilty in vehicular homicide

RIDGWAY – A jury found Brandon Michael Weidow guilty of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and related offenses for his involvement in the 2012 one-vehicle crash that claimed the life of Savannah Straub.

The St. Marys Area gymnasts opened their 2014-2015 season with a 119.650 to 108.425 victory over the Ridgway squad Wednesday night in Ridgway.

Emergency personnel have busy day

Area emergency personnel had a busy day Thursday with multiple calls ranging from traffic accidents to icy roadways.
State Route 255 was first temporarily closed shortly after 10 a.m. due to a truck blocking the roadway, according to scanner reports. Elk Company 1 (Crystal Fire Department) was called out near SR 255's intersection with West Joseph Road in St. Marys. The roadway was later reopened.
