Autism Charity Ball bringing awareness of the disorder

In an effort to bring autism disorders to the forefront, Dickinson Center, Inc. is hosting its first Autism Awareness Charity Ball on Friday, June 3 at the Red Fern in St. Marys.

ECC’s Megan Dornisch wins gold medal in discus

Elk County Catholic High School senior thrower Megan Dornisch won the PIAA Class AA championship in the discus Friday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships being held at Shippensburg University.
Megan threw the discus 141’3” to win the title. She had been seeded second in the event with a distance of 134’10”. Aubree Ray of Middletown, who was the top seed at states, placed second in the event with a throw of 137’2”.

CAPSEA faces major budget cut

The budget proposed by the state House of Representatives would cut 10 percent of critical funding for services to victims of abuse and rape, forcing nonprofit organizations like CAPSEA, Inc. [Citizens Against Physical, Sexual & Emotional Abuse] to make serious cutbacks, according to CAPSEA Executive Director Billie Jo Weyant.
CAPSEA also provides legal assistance for people living in poverty to address such needs as home foreclosures, disability benefits, and homeless assistance.
According to Weyant this cut would revert the organization back to its 1998 budget level.

Paint and pesticides collection to start June 1

A regular collection for paint and pesticides will once again get under way this year, starting Wednesday from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys. Area residents utilizing the collection are asked to first stop at the Community Recycling Center to inform volunteers that they have material to drop off.
Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner explained that this is necessary because, for the time being, paint and pesticides will still need to be dropped off near the electronics recycling location, which is where the material was collected last year.

Dennis Michael Carlini, 68, of 148 Spruce St., Brockway, died Thursday, May 26, 2011 at DuBois Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 9, 1943 in Ridgway, son of the late Michael and Virginia Eukon Carlini.
On June 8, 1983, he married Denise "Dee Dee" Esposito of Brockway, who survives.
He was a member at St. Tobias in Brockway, where he also served as an usher for many years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during

Tina M. Close

Tina M. Close, 43, of East Weber Avenue, DuBois, died suddenly at work, Tuesday, May 24, 2011.
She was born October 3, 1968 in Lynn, Mass., daughter of Eugene Close of Ridgway and Ann (Moats) Stroud of St. Marys, who survive.  
She was a clerk at Snappy’s of DuBois and enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing. She lived most of her life in Massachusetts and lived in the St. Marys/Ridgway area for 10 years until moving to DuBois last year to attend school.

Clark R. Ingram

Clark R. Ingram, 89, of Bennetts Valley Highway, Penfield, died Sunday, May 22, 2011 at the home of his son after a lengthy illness.
He was born on September 11, 1921 in Caledonia, son of the late George R. and Hannah (Anderson) Ingram.
On July 29, 1945, he married Eleanor (Gallagher) Ingram, who survives.

Acting at a North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] board meeting Wednesday morning, officials green-lighted a loan proposal to allow the sale of Love's Canoe Rental & Sales.
The real estate property was purchased by Miranda Neville and Steven Putt of Country Squirrel Outfitters, LLC, located in Canon City, Colo.

Canoe dice run to benefit Make-A-Wish

A group of Make-A-Wish supporters headed up by St. Marys residents Nancy O'Vell and Leah Leuschel is planning to hold their first annual canoe dice run on Saturday, June 11. The event is slated to begin at Lazy River Canoe Rental along Main Street in Ridgway and will end in Portland Mills.
Registration will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the last dice rolls will take place at 5 p.m. sharp. There is a small registration fee.
O'Vell explained that the idea to hold a canoe dice run "came out of the blue" when she and her husband, Roger, attended a recent canoe race in Emporium.
