Arthur Osmer

January 14, 2011

Arthur Osmer, 73, of 215 Birch St., Kane, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at the Cleveland Clinic.
He was born Jan. 30, 1937, in Kane, the son of Arthur and Helen Gerarge Osmer.
On Sept. 5, 2009, in Kane, he married Nancy DeCecchis, who survives.
He had been employed by Coca-Cola in Bradford for 25 years. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW in Coudersport. He served in the U.S. Marines.

Francis M. Gerber

Francis M. Gerber, 88, of 188 Wehler Rd., St. Marys, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011.
He was born Feb. 1, 1922 in St. Marys, a son of the late Bernard and Theresa Wendel Gerber.
On Aug. 24, 1944 in St. Joseph Church in Force, he married the late Mary L. Parziale Gerber, who preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2005.

SMA swim teams sweep Brookville squads

ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Area High School Swim and Dive Team held their 2011 home opener on Thursday night against the Brookville Raiders. The Dutch and Lady Dutch squads won their meets, raising their records to 2-0 for the season.

Dutch wrestlers down short-handed Rams 63-8

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling team raised their record to 5-4 with a 63-8 victory over the short-handed Johnsonburg Rams.
The Dutchmen won nine matches by forfeit: picking up forfeit wins were Evan Smith at 119 pounds, Alex Coudriet at 125, Darren Lyon at 135, Alex Feldbauer at 140, Joe McLaughlin at 189, Jimmy Antonelli at 215, Kevin Hoy at 285, Damien Wensel at 103 and Trenton Bowers at 112 pounds.
In wrestling action, Jesse Wolfe of the Rams recorded a 15-0 technical over Bill Gabor at the 2:42 mark of their 130-pound match.

Bellefonte gymnasts hand St. Marys Area squad first loss

The Bellefonte gymnastics squad defeated the St. Marys Area gymnasts by a 130.325 to 122.05 score Wednesday night in a meet held at the St. Marys Area Middle School.
This was the St. Marys Area squad’s first loss of the season.
“We knew coming into this meet we were going to have a hard time trying to keep up with them. They have a lot of club gymnasts we simply cannot compete with,” said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless.

Rita M. Eberl

Rita M. Eberl, 95, of 1151 Looker Mountain Trail, Rixford, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011 at Bradford Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 24, 1915, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude Schreiber Hammer.
On Thanksgiving Day 1936, she was married to Philip G. Eberl of Kersey, who preceded her in death in 1996.
She attended Sacred Heart Elementary and St. Benedict's Academy for girls, then worked for Stackpole Carbon Co. until her marriage.

Dutchmen down DuBois 64-49 in D9 League play

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team used a strong second half to defeat the DuBois Area Beavers by a 64-49 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Beavers held a 27-23 lead at the half. The Dutch were able to outscore DuBois by a 41-22 margin in the second half of the contest.
“I didn’t think pressure bothered them and after the first quarter they had a substantial lead,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido. “We really thought at halftime that we needed to put pressure on them and play our style of game.”

Mary Ann Simchick

Mary Ann Simchick, 76, of 321 Woodland Ave., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 11, 2011, at Bradford Regional Medical Center in Bradford following a short illness.
She was born Dec. 13, 1934 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Frank and Rose Budzinski Kissel.
On June 16, 1956 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, she married Joseph L. Simchick, who preceded her in death on May 4, 2006.
She resided in Johnsonburg all her life and graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1954.

Janice E. Shope

Janice E. Shope, 71, of 1020 LeMans Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 12, 2010 at her residence.
She was born Nov. 15, 1939, in Daguschonda, daughter of the late Ralph and Ruth Yonker Gorton.
On Sept. 6, 1958, in St. Benedict's Church in Daguschonda, she married David A. Shope, who survives.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Ridgway High School, Class of 1957. She was employed at the St. Marys Job Center for over 18 years, retiring in 2000.

Mary Lou Hammar

Mary Lou Hammar (nee Gillen), 84, died unexpectedly on Jan. 1, 2011, surrounded by her family.
She was born in St. Marys.
She married John Hammar, who preceded her in death.
She moved to Erie when she married her husband. They retired to Venice, Fla. in the 1990s, and then moved to Naples to be near family.
