911 could move to ITEC

RIDGWAY – Unconfirmed reports received Friday morning indicate that Elk County officials may elect to relocate the county's 911 Center from its current location along Boot Jack Road to the Industrial Technical Education Center [ITEC] facility along Montmorenci Road.

Supervisors discuss Marcellus drilling concerns

The Fox Township Supervisors discussed Marcellus gas drilling in the township during their recent meeting and according to supervisor Mike Keller, the township is in the preliminary stages of working on a zoning ordinance to help place restrictions on future drilling in the township.
Responding to a question from an area resident regarding the number of Marcellus wells in the Boone Mountain area, Supervisor Randy Gradizzi stated that he believed there are about 27 more wells scheduled to be drilled in that area.
Keller added that the drilling is not going to go away.

Fox Township celebrates Light Up Night

Santa and Mrs. Claus kicked off Light Up Night in Kersey on Friday evening as they arrived in style at the Fox Township Community Park inside a colorful pick-up truck painted in the holiday colors of white with red and green stripes. The truck was situated on a trailer pulled by Dick Cooney’s Peterbilt logging truck. The Grinch kept an eye on the festivities as he was perched on the back of the trailer. Youngsters had the opportunity to visit with the Clauses, as Santa’s elves distributed bags filled with candy, a coloring book and other goodies.

Dickinson earns seal of excellence

State Rep. Matt Gabler presented Dickinson Mental Health Center (DMHC) yesterday morning with an award from the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations (PANO) Seal of Excellence for successfully completing the Standards for Excellence certification program.
“This is a rigorous certification to obtain,” Gabler said.
DMHC participated in a voluntary peer review by PANO which examined the organization for compliance with its Standards for Excellence; An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector.

Kearney discusses budget challenges

St. Marys Area School District Superintendent Ann Kearney addressed budget concerns during Thursday evening’s SMASD Board of Directors workshop.
“We are beginning the preparation for the 2011-12 budget with extreme caution due to the continued economic concerns of the area, the state, the nation and for that matter the world,” Kearney said. “With the medial warning of the state education budget cuts that could be broad and deep, Cindy FinGado and I have set forth the timeline for our budget development. We have just completed our 2009-10 audit.”

Community Recycling Center in need of volunteers

Bekki Titchner, recycling and solid waste coordinator, recently discussed with members of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority the need for volunteers at the Community Recycling Center.
"We've been extremely busy [at the Community Recycling Center] and it's to the point where we'll probably have to really sit down and discuss how we want to handle the future. There was like three days when it was slow, that was when we first opened, and then it hasn't been slow since," Titchner said.

Elk Catholic has three AML All-Stars

The Elk County Catholic High School Crusaders placed three players on the Allegheny Mountain League Football All-Star South Division squad.
Ricky Pearsall, who holds the Elk Catholic all-time rushing record, was named to the running back position, while Zac Brody, who led the Crusaders in tackles, was named as a defensive lineman. The other member of the ECCHS squad to make the All-Star squad was offensive lineman Jake Geer. All three players are seniors.

Anna Stanish

Anna Stanish, 101, of the Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 706 Lincoln Ave., St. Marys, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 30, 2010 at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness.
She was born June 16, 1909 in Donaueschingen, Germany, a daughter of the late Milan and Sophie Rothmund Geci.
On Sept. 27, 1923 in Sacred Heart Church, she married Max Stanish, who preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1970.

Paul Joseph “Bogie” Biel

Paul Joseph “Bogie” Biel, 62, of Old Kane Road, Wilcox, died unexpectedly on Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, during the course of one of his favorite hobbies.
He was born Dec. 13, 1947, in Ridgway, son Olga (Damier) Biel of Wilcox, and the late Vincent Biel.
On Oct. 14, 1972, he married Donna Zawatski, who survives.

Flood rages through Ridgway

Early Wednesday morning, the Borough of Ridgway was faced with one of its worst floods since January of 1992.
Emergency Management and the Ridgway Volunteer Fire Department decided at 4 a.m. Wednesday to activate the Emergency Operations Plan as the raging Clarion River flooded the West End of downtown Ridgway. The flooding forced the borough to close the Clarion River Bridge and many of the streets in downtown Ridgway, including Center Street, Vine Alley, the majority of West End, and Route 219 by Lindberg Furniture.
